St. Georges Flag Faff-On

Now I know this is a touchy subject, but something close to my heart. I’m not talking about those crappy flags on cars but the England flags people have on their houses.

There’s a lot that people are flying at the moment and to be honest I think it looks good – albeit a bit tacky it gives a sense of patriotism and makes you proud. But it’s getting out of control. My local radio station reported in the news today a man in Sunderland has been made to take his flags down or face the consequences. People have complained about it.
See here -> http://www.metroradio.co.uk/Article.asp?id=226445

Now I don’t have a problem with it, and I’m sure 99.9% of people here won’t have a problem. People in my street have been asked to take them down because ‘it is upsetting the ethnic community and making them feel unsafe’. Now forgive me for sounding harsh but what the hell has it got to do with them? They come to our country so should accept our way of lives. Instead they call the police and people are threatened with prosecution if they don’t take it down. One neighbour was told, by flying a flag on his chimney stack, it was ‘inciting racial hatred’ – how the hell do they work that one out.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/c...re/5036378.stm states that the Peterborough council will let you fly a flag during the world cup games, but not afterwards. Now sorry for sounding blunt but why the hell can we not fly our flag whenever and wherever we want. You go to America and every other house has the stars and the stripes on it – yet if we fly it we may ‘face prosecution’

Does anyone feel like this isn’t our country now? We can’t do anything without being penalised. We can’t even fly our countries flag anymore without threats from government & Police.

I normally wouldn't say this but...this topic has been on here a thousand and one times in the two years I've been a member.

And you have misinterpreted the article you've posted.

Well, I'm in the Tyne and Wear area now and there are flags up all over the place. I suspect there have been one or two isolated incidents that have been blown out of proportion, as usual. I can't see any problem with it and have not seen or heard of anyone actually wanting people to take their flags down.

This is farcical. Again, it's all about planning, flags on mast etc. Absolutely sod all to do with ethnic minorites blah blah bloody blah!

'The law actually only allows one flag, with no advertising, flying from a single mast, said the council.' That's what it says in the article. You even gave a link to it.

'The law actually only allows one flag, with no advertising, flying from a single mast, said the council.' Oooh look. There it is again.

Ridiculous.

I like the point :"The whole street is getting pulled down soon so how can I be downgrading it any more?"

The case in Sunderland has actually more to do with the number of the flags and making a street look untidy. He has been told to remove some, not all.

Have a look at the picture, slightly OTT??

Flags pics

Just a couple of observations:

Last week I saw an Asian lad of around 18 wearing an 'England' zip up jacket; presumably he would not be offended by the flag.

Has anyone ever been down near the border country between England and Wales? There are England flags all over the place, and a great deal of patriotism in that area; presumably the Welsh don't complain.

Well no - but then who does complain - unless its done to the ludicrous extent of the house in Sunderland.

If a person is told to take down a single flag because it upsets a minority group then that would be wrong.

But there seem to be far more reports of that sort of thing than are actual true examples.

For instance - tabloid reports that Blackpool cabbies were not allowed to wear England shirts, Radio 1 was refusing to play any England world cup song - these are either non-stories or simple fabrications.

Tabloids are desperate to run stories about "PC killjoys". If there were real cases to be reported, there'd be no need to make up so many stupid stories on the topic.

A different side to this topic - There is a pub in london that had all the flags of every nation in the world cup in his pub.

A man rang up to complain that it is offencive to Muslims that he should be flying the Saudi Arabian flag (because of the message on said flag) in a drinking establishment and he should take it down. Then two customers in the pub a few days later refused to leave til he took it down. The landlord took it down for fear of the safety of his pub and staff.

So now he flies all the flags but the saudi flag. Are there any Saudi Arabians on here please that can confirm its offensive to Muslims or Saudis to fly the flag in a pub. Or that they'd rather the landlord show his support to all nations in a football tournament (not holy war).

It's. A. FLAG!

Every country has one, they're not offensive. It's a symbol of the country, that is all.

I'll be proudly flying mine (until it flies out of my window, probably ), and I'll be damned if anyone will tell me otherwise. Honestly, this country at times

Daisy, a simular case has happened here in birmingham. My dads mate owns a very large and popular pub in a area of birmingham, and has decked his pub with all 32 participating nations flags. But he has had death threats to takle the saudi flag down, so he has had to do that for safety reasons. I just cant see it being a problem, i really cant!

Who cares though???? If they dont want to be part of it, they should not enter the competition. Simple as that.

Come on England!

and that really was the official line from the council, as opposed to the usual anecdotal misrepresentation the tabloids like to spin on it?

if the reason really is so as not to offend Muslims, then why isn't there a blanket no flags policy?

why have only a handful of individuals been asked to take flags down?

doesn't that suggest - however dumbass the reasoning may be - that it's to do with planning regulations, rather than offending anybody?

Has anyone here actually met an "ethnic" (for want of a better word) that is actually offended by the george cross / christmas / blackboards blah blah blah??? I havnt. Has anyone asked any "ethnics" if they are actually offended?

Personally I think its just propaganda by the Daily Mail reading sad white middle aged men in office ( probably judging others by thier own standards) who assume "ethnics" will be offended. This also perpetuates an angry reaction of "I'll fly my flag if I want, if you ethnics dont like it, bugger off where you came from" attitude also.
