Top gear sunday 16/7/06. caravan episode

Was the burning of the Caravan a staged stunt. Having badly damaged a caravan did they purposely burn it and pretend it was a chip pan fire. why did the AK47 in the caravan not explode (presumably it had bullets somewhere). Did they purposely burn it to defraud the insurers?. Is it a waste of BBC licence fee if it was a staged burning (who tries to put out a chip pan fire with a sofa cushion)

If you know Top Gear then you would know they hate Caravans and Caravaners, so of course it was staged, best laugh I've had in ages, too many things happened it's hard to pick out which was the best bit

Great sequence. Burning should happen to every caravan.

I particularly liked the "serves you right" electronic sign in the rear window when they were holding up a horsebox. A justified two fingers to that selfish minority of motorists who do just what they want without giving any consideration to the frustration their selfish behaviour causes to others.

Could deviineride be a member of the fraternity I wonder?

"Waste of the licence fee" - Top Gear is one of the BBC's most profitable exports at the moment. A couple of measly caravans are small beer, and, indeed, an improvement.

I did like the crafty edited shots of other caravaners looking at the fire....obviously not in the same field.

Porsche challenge was staged as well...and more.

Never mind all week. The whole segment was one of the funniest things I've seen all year. Brilliant.

Love them or loath them Clarkson, May and Hammond (and the dog) provide some true comic gems. I'd quite happily watch those three attempt a round the world trip (in the style of Ewan McGregors 'Long Way Round') in a caravan.

I'm thinking the fire bit was done in a different field to the rest. And that tent they hit was probably theirs, too.

The turning the the car and caravan around in the road was the best bit of that program

Also know when the toyota f1 car only did 81mph, some smart arse *cough cough* predicted 80 mph

You do know you can watch this episode plus the rest of this series on the BBC Two Broadband Website. So you never have to miss an episode.

It was funny, no doubt about that, but I couldn't help thinking "what is the point of this?". It took up probably 25 mins of a one hour programme and was not really anything to do with motoring. Just an excuse for Jeremy to indulge his prejudices again. The "comedy" reversing into the "neighbour's" awning and the whole chip pan fiasco was pure Carry On - and just as amusing, and the totally unnecessary crawling along at 30 mph to cause hold ups and blocking a road to perform a comedy u-turn should probably have resulted in charges being laid. I imagine the caravanning lobby (and I should declare an interest having been brought up in a caravanning family) will be up in arms - that was probably the point - but I think the show did give viewers an opportunity to make up their own minds and see what a perfectly pleasant way to spend a weekend this might be. Caravan dealers will probably be happy at the 25 minute advert aired to a predominantly upwardly mobile audience of 5m people.

Blatant anti-caravanning exercise! As soon as Clarkson mentioned they'd got their hands on it for £300 you knew it was history.

Lets spell things out of those who still don't understand.
Top Gear is entertainment, 'boys c0cking about in cars', it should in no way be taken as a serious motoring program.
Can you think of any other factual program where someone is allowed to hold court and spout a load of biased old tosh devoid of any real research completely unopposed week in week out.

Caravan nothing to do with motoring, what are they to do with then, trains?
The damn things are on the road with the rest of us who are motoring.

I don't know how anyone could see that piece as advertising for the Caravanning lobby, drive for hours, sit in a field, meet a mad granny, fill a chemical toilet.
Downside for the caravanning lobby is that no other motoring show will go near a serious caravanning piece for years.
Then again would you want the god awful Pulling Power to cover any subject you gave a jot about?
5th Gear is a spent force, but it's better than PP and bearable viewing also has the awesome VBH.

Oh and they paid £3,000 for the caravan, probably costs that much to produce a minute of Top Gear anyway.

I know Top Gear costs hundreds of thousands of pounds every episode, but it's worth every penny! This caravan stunt was hilarious! Who cares that it was staged?? It's funnier than any of the BBC's most recent sitcom efforts!

However it still doesn't beat the car/boat challenge they did a month or so ago. I was almost crying with laughter when Clarkson starts getting big headed on the lake & is thrashing about so much the water starts coming in and then watching them clinging on as it sinks!

However staged it is, this show is funny, informative & entertaining. Just keep it coming lads!

No-one has mentioned that there was another program on at exactly the same time as Top Gear where Richard Hammond was also blowing up caravans. Great scheduling of "Brainiac" Sky1!
