If you saw a distressed dog trapped in a car in the heat......

......would you smash the window to save it's life ?

I ask this because on Wednesday a mate of mine encountered just such a situation and phoned the police. They told him not to smash the window as he could be charged with malicious damage, as he was not in a qualified position to determine the extent of the dog's suffering. They said would be there soon. He stayed at the scene, and about an hour later, no police, but two guys from the RSPCA turned up and smashed the window !!! . The dog was OK as it turned out, but by that time could have been dead. The RSPCA will be prosecuting the owner.

I'm afraid if it was me I would have smashed the window to save the dog. If I'd be done for mallicious damage than so be it. It would have been worth it to save the dog's life.

I would have smashed the window aswell, a dog or any other animal can cook alive in less than five minutes in car. I can't get over how stupid some people are.

I would phone the RSPCA. I believe that usually they turn up as quickly as possible in those situations.

Afterall - if they smash the window, you aren't going to be done for criminal damage or (hopefully) not get the cr*p beaten out of you by the car's owner.

But more importantly - I'd want to see that person prosecuted.

I would just get a couple of independent witnesses to back me up that the dog was in danger and smash the window without hesitation.

Anyone who leaves a dog in a car in the heat of summer should be prosecuted, their stupidity is beyond belief, but before they are prosecuted they too should be locked in a car and left on a car park in the heat to understand exactly what it is like

I would phone the RSPCA or police but stay by the car, if it looked too bad would smash the window and try to help the dog.

Ditto!! I would also do the same if I saw a baby left in a car!! Happens all too often.

I would call the RSPCA immediately, but I'd also stay by the car to ensure the dog was okay until they arrived. If there was any change (deterioration) and no sign of the owner, then I'd smash the window to pieces! It infuriates me that people are still so mindless that they do this in today's world!

Why - are you suggesting the dog's life is less important than that of a human?

the police & RSPCA, seem to be the best move, its not worth getting into trouble for someone elses dog, and if it dies, it wasnt you who locked it in the car, with the windows closed.

reminded of a CSI episode, about a baby who died due to being locked in a car on a hot day, ok it turned out the baby was dead before then, and they pretended it died in the heat, but other babies do die that way.

are you suggesting, that if a dog & a human were trapped somewhere, and it was easier to get to the dog, than the human, you would give the human up for dead, and rescue the dog?

I see what you're saying, but (to me) I couldn't sit back and let an animal suffer due to the actions of some inconsiderate and uncaring fool if I could do something to help.

well as long as you understand that the police could bring charges against you, then I probaly wouldnt stop you doing it.

No and that has nothing to do with my reply. If you look at the post I commented on, how many times do you see a disabled person trapped in a car? I don't know how often you see a baby trapped in a car either (hopefully none), but I've never seen that.

I'm fully aware of that, but I still couldn't sit back and let a dog suffer when I could actually do something to help it. However, I'd hope the RSPCA would've turned up before I needed to take any action.

Pathetic! Lets leave YOU in a boiling hot car, see if you like it! Why should a dog's life be any different from a human's?

I'd probably wait 5 minutes to see if the owner returns to the car, and if not, THEN i'd smash it.

I would consider that as animal abuse and you can get fined and jailed for that.

To say that an animals life isnt important and you would just leave it for dead makes you one sick person.

That reply makes no sense im afraid.

Both lives are as precious as the next, so if that was the case then depending on the situation then maybe i would have to.
