Have I An Allergy To Fish?
As a child I loved fish, fish fingers, fish cakes etc etc.. Then last year I started having problems, after I had a fish and chip about 2 hours later I started getting really bad cramps in my stomach, shortly after I spent the rest of the night sitting on the toilet with diahorea and vomitting, I never touched fish for quite a while after that but then decided to give it another go, and the exact same problem. I've not touched fish in about 6 months but gave it another go tonight and I think its for happening again. I have a really bad cramps at the min. Have I an allergy?? And why has it only came on now in my late 20's when I have had no problems up to now

It could be but it sounds more like intolerance. I once had cramps like that myself after eating fish and chips but that was put down to gastritis but my mum has a definite fish allergy after eating rainbow trout in 1995. She had loved fish all her life but this developed suddenly so it's certainly possible to develop allergy at any age. She basically found it blocked her breathing and had to vomit it back up. To cut a long story short she suffered a rash and swelling and had to be taken to hospital the next day "hours from death" only being saved after being given an injection of ephedrine.
If memory serves me right it's your histamine levels in the blood that indicate a true allergy. Mum's were massively above normal and it was immediately clear this was a major allergic reaction. Maybe you should ask for yours to be checked tonight if possible or first thing tomorrow morning? Ask to be seen as an emergency and if you're in any doubt go straight to A&E. Allergies or intollerences can suddenly come and go in different stages of life, I used to like spicey foods such as currys and chilli con carni, but now I can't touch them and if I even think about those types of food I break out into a sweat, feel sick and my skin goes red...

Definitely sounds like you have a problem with fish. You can be tested for allergies but it's not cheap. If I were you, I'd just admit to yourself that you cannot eat fish ever again!

It's probably an intolerance for huge helping of FAT that it's cooked in.
Try eating steamed/poached/baked fish with nothing on it and see what happened. Or if that is too bland, a small squit of lemon juice and a sprinkling of a few herbs makes it more bearable. If you normally eat quite healthily you'll probably find it's the sudden unhealthy dollop of junk food cooked in the same fat that has cooked 500 other meals that is upsetting you. |
