Grace Dent 7/8/06

from Grace Dent's blog http://www.radiotimes.com/content/features/bigbrother/

Quote:
during the past seven years, the one constant, basic rule that has kept the show alive is that Big Brother is a test of popularity and endurance. The winner can be a timid goody-goody or a noisy prat, but their skill is to stay popular. If you're not popular in or out of the house on Big Brother, you'll be voted out eventually and then it's game over for good, leaving the ultimate winner. Week after week, it gets harder to stay popular as the homesickness and cabin fever affects your persona; but if you can endure this longer than everybody else then the £100,000 is yours.

What makes finale night so goosebumpy is the expression on the last, triumphant, sensory-deprived soul as they climb the white stairs and find themselves rocketed back to reality in an explosion of fireworks and flashing cameras. Whether your personal favourite wins or not, it's a curiously satisfying end.

To meddle with this basic fundamental rule and let Nikki, Grace or Lisa etc back in to win feels quite wrong to me.

Big Brother can experiment with fake evictions, golden tickets and secret houses, but the moment they change the rules, the whole concept feels utterly pointless
Not only were they were turfed out by a majority vote because of their unpopular behaviour; since then, they've all been home to their families, slept well and recharged their batteries. They've eaten nice food, been down the gym, seen all their mates and had their hair coloured and cut. They've bought some new clothes, had a good look through all of their tabloid clippings, and now they're allowed back into the house once again - fresh as they were on day 1.

Meanwhile Pete, Richard, Ash, Imogen, Jennie and Glyn sit in the house feeling addled, flabby, homesick and slightly deranged.

Big Brother can experiment with fake evictions, golden tickets, secret houses and secret gardens, but the moment they simply just change the rules so they can re-instate Nikki, Grace and Lisa, whose deranged behaviour wins ratings, and then give them the chance of winning £100,000, the whole concept of Big Brother begins to feel utterly pointless.

If nobody at Big Brother gives a hoot about the last ten weeks of texts that everyone has spent money on, then why are we still lining their pockets by voting at all? It's just a thought, but why not just stop voting? Then the producers can decide among themselves who wins and why, while at least we enjoy the ongoing antics for free.

I can't see the point in voting any more for Big Brother 7.
Totally agree. I can't even see the point in watching it any more, and I won't be. I'm now an ex-BB viewer.

but why has it
yet again
to be about nikki, grace, lisa
i'd be quite happy about these sort of complaints
if the actual motive for them was'nt so transparently anti nikki
grace and lisa included in the list
to reinforce a particular negative view of nikki

complain all you want about BBs unfairness but do it fairly
about the actual twist
not as yet another means of attacking nikki

It has got nothing to do with being anti-Nikki!!!

The reason Nikki even comes into it is because it could be seen as an underhand way to get an ex-housemate back in.

It is the principal that even though many people liked and supported evicted housemates they were still voted out by the majority regardless of whether or not you agree with the decision.

i felt a little sad with graces blog. It was an excellent read as always but the tone in parts reflected that the magic has gone out of the show now that endemol have resorted to blatant cheating.

I wonder if BB will ever feel the same again? A bit like when you are a youngster and you find out there isn't a father christmas.

sad

I was saying this on the radio 5 thread. The complaints(perfectly justified) are getting dumbed down by the constant reference to Nikki in particular & not allowing her to win. It is coming across as a group of fanatics who are sore about not getting their own way in a reality tv show. People need to keep to the key point.

here's the clincher

Maybe if millions and millions of us had known months ago that our next ten weeks of voting money was all to be for nothing, we could have put that cash to a worthy cause, too.
I have only seen grace dent on BBBM once, and never on BBLB. I guess that will be her last time.

Probably the best big brother comentator there is.

I thought about which of the housemates I would like to go back in and came to the conclusion that I don't really want any of them back in. Since the 'twist' was announced on Friday I haven't watched it any more (although here I am trawling through the forum for some reason )

I don't generally follow Grace Dent or agree with what she says when I see her...

...but she's spot-on in this article.

My own feelings are that the most objectionable part of the whole twist is that the ex HM who makes it into the main house gets a chance to win the money- the only ex HM who is capable of doing so and walking away with the 100k is Nikki and I reckon that is why the argument keeps coming back to her. If a relatively non-offensive ex HM e.g. Michael, stood a really good chance of coming back and winning then their name would keep cropping up and I do think there would be (almost!) the same level of fuss and complaint.

My outrage is about the fact that Nikki is coming back, but not because she annoyed me when she was in there (I know she will annoy me when she gets back in but thats merely coincidental to my main reason for not wanting her back), but because her return is q.likely to produce the worst final night result i.e. an ex HM (irrelevant WHO they are) winning the £££!

i dont
i was pointing out that this article choose to represent
all of the HMs by listing Nikki, Grace or Lisa etc

if there was no trace of it being about nikki etc
why do these three names randemly crop up
why not spiral, lea, mikey

i dont particularly want this twist either
but it seems that almost every time there is a complaint about it
a large part of the argument suggests that its really about nikki
and it does'nt help the argument
