Shopping in Harrods and Harvey Nichols

A friend of mine reckons they are really fussy about who they let in, and they have a dress code and stuff. So naturally, this has put me off going there. It's a pain in the ass because there is a certain label that I am into at the moment and these two stores have the biggest collections of this label.

Who here has shopped at these places? Are they really as stuck up as my friend says? Can they really refuse entry to people who look poor?

I've been to Harvey Nic's many times (but I look great ).

I once saw Helen Worth there though, so I wouldn't say they're fussy at all.

Well, Harrods didn't stop me from going in, but they expect you to 'cover up' - i.e. you can't waltz in wearing no shirt if you are a bloke.

One thing I am surprised about when you go into Harrods is the amount of people in there. I was expecting there to be tumbleweed rolling and some stuffy department store that hadn't been updated since the 80s, but oh no it's very much the opposite.

The place is completely heaving at times, with lots of tourists and people who've come to lose their 'Harrods virginity' - but some of the stuff there left me with a face; the prices of some of the stuff there is madness. £20k for a little toy Hummer or a Rolex.

Harrods is a bit of tourist hotspot these days, so i doubt they have a dress code.

Not sure about Harvey Nics... but i'm not sure i'd let back there after a certain incident the last time i was in the 5th floor bar

Would they let me in, for example, wearing a River Island velour tracksuit and white and gold Nike trainers? This is the sort of thing I normally wear out shopping because it's comfortable and I'm a hard-core shopper.

Having worked in one of these establishments, I can say that they let most people in without a second glance.

However, don't go in looking like a dogs dinner in denim mini with mottled thighs and flip flops! Or like you just stepped off the beach, a little class goes a long way. You can make any outfit look expensive if you accessorise and have an air of confidence.

For example in the case of Harrods, expect the doorman to open the door for you and respond with a polite smile and a thank you, works every time

I think Harrods have some kind of 'dress code' Im sure I remember reading in the papers before now about them knocking back 'celebs' cos they werent appropriately dressed. Not sure what constitutes appropriate tho

You can't go into Harrods in ripped denim.

And you're not allowed to take rucksacks in there. The doormen will take them off you and let you collect them when you leave.

Tracksuit and trainers is fine.

I've never had a problem in Harvey Nicks and I wear cheap jeans and, worse, cheap boots. The cocktails on the 5th (if it's still there) are fab...

I went to Harrods recently, and you are allowed jeans but not ripped ones .... and you do need to cover up. No tiny short shorts allowed.

One thing though - try not to take a rucksack with you. I did, and you have to carry them, not have them on your back. The sack was sooo heavy in my hand it ruined the trip. I had to keep resting.

Good god. I just had a look at the website as well....i hate this kinda "pricey because it has a name" stuff. Grrr. I mean, would anyone ACTUALLY wear this - http://www.harveynichols.com/files/i...S06_Prorsu.jpg ...it seems Ab Fab is far too close to the truth sometimes. And about £900 for one item of that

I have been in Harrods many time but don't ever want to go again. This type of snobbery is from 100 years ago and has no place today. It's the 'we'll sell you ripped jeans and flip flops at vastly inflated prices BUT don't be so silly as to try to get back in here wearing them' attitude that makes me sick. I'm not saying they should start letting tramps in but this is just plain daft. Spend your money where it's wanted, these days there's nothing they sell that you can't get elsewhere and cheaper. It's only worth going in to see the food hall anyway. And if you want to make an unobtrusive entrance, try the side doors.
