What would happen if Sky bought the Motorway network?

The M6 Toll road is run by a company that built and charge to use it.

Major bridges (Forth Road Bridge, Humber Bridge, Severn Bridges etc.) are all run by private companies.

So, what's stopping Sky buy the whole motorway network?

Pay to drive near Manchester when Man U are playing?

And what would happen if they did?

This scenerio is *just* as likely as Sky buying the whole of DTT.

You would only be able to drive a Sky badged car. You would have to buy these and pay a monthly subscription. They would be made by Ford; General Motors and Skoda.
What you got would be pot luck so there would be endless forums about how to get a Skoda.

You would start by getting the whole network to use for free.

The M6 you couldn't use with your S*y car, but would have to have a standard car until an agreement was reached between S*y and your OwN car after which your OwN car would have it's dedicated network to include some S*y motorways. S*y would start giving cars away, some people would hack OwN cars after which the OwN car network would close, some of which would be sold to S*y.

In the meantime, charges would be introduced for the use of the S*y Motorways.

Many many more motorways would be introduced and you would have cutting edge cars which took you back to where you hadn't been when you weren't there. You could even pause your journey, to return there instantly at a moments notice.

The remainder of the OwN network would still exist for those who didn't want to pay to drive, but there would be less choice of routes and destinations.

The future.......would remain to be seen.............

I was once told at school that Gas, Electric, telephone etc HAD to be nationalised as it would be silly to have more than one set of cables under the ground.

Nothing is beyond possibility, but possibilities may lead to nothing.

If Sky bought the Motorway network, then you would need a card costing £650 per annum to have swiped at the slip road entry and on congested areas of the network like the M25 ring you would be paying £1.50 per mile off peak and £3.00 per mile at peak times and £1.50 per mile at peak times on any stretch of the network and James Murdoch would get £4.6 million a year for running it.The total profit per annum to News International would be £12.8 billion per annum and the standard of living nationally would fall by 17.8% on average incomes.

You'd have to pay a yearly fee to use the roads, and just when you thought that paid for it, they'd introduce 'pay per drive'.

Hang on a minute, isn't that what Tony's cronies just annonced with more toll roads ? (Well he did have a chat with Ruperts boys recently before his hols.....)

What exactly has this got to do with the media? And even if it is relevent, surely it should be in the Sky forum.

Some people...

And, as you are driving along Sky's motorways, would you have a logo in the top left-hand corner of your windscreen telling you which motorway you are on?

Everytime it rains the motorway network would grind to a complete halt with "No satellite signal being recived" being displayed on the dashboard - you may have the occassional surge forward in some lanes though.

You wouldn't be allowed to take your car abroad.

After a short while a seperate network of trunk roads would start offering cheaper capacity, which would then join the Sky platform.

Oh, and the use the $ky network (as it would become known) you'd have to pay in AU$ as well

Your car would have to be permently connected to the phone network - $ky would realise that teathering it to your home phone is a bit impractical so would buy the O2 network, and integrate a mobile phone into all $ky cars.

Larger MPV's would carry the $ky + branding, and would cost an additional fee, unless you subscribe to the All Lanes package.

If you only buy the $ky car (or cancel your subscription), you would be unable to use the Motorway network, however it's satnav would keep trying to take you down it.

Every few months at random you'd wake up to find your car has returned to M9 J98 for some bizarre reason.

Now, wheres me passport?!

Motorway drivers would moan continously about what great value they get from their £650 Sky Motorways card, so why do they need to pay 50p to BBC A-Roads...

You'd be able to plan your journeys ahead using the now and next bar, situated at the bottom of your windowscreen.

Your car would lock up or freeze for no reason and without warning.

Charged a higher rate depending on road surface quality.

In car entertainment would probably have sound drop outs.

No it isn't; it's just as likely that Sky will set up a watermelon export/import company in Brazil, and you know it.

Unless you can provide any evidence at all that Sky have even implied interest in the Motorway network then this scenario is just a Sim City.

If your Audi / Jaguar / BMW / Mercedes broke down whilst driving on a Sky operated motorway they would simply give you an exchange, refurbished car to get you going as soon as possible for a fixed fee - only problem is that the 'engineer' will only have a Proton on the lorry!

Car mechanics would say it was all your own fault and ask for 65 quid each time your car stopped in a queue.

Your new car would slow down gradually over time as more and more features were added....

People like me would harp on about the number of different non-Sky roads you could take with a different car
