Father of six killed in unprovoked attack

Murdered man 'was in wrong place'

Detectives investigating the murder of a family man who they believe was in "the wrong place at the wrong time" are questioning five people.

David Woods, 51, was found with serious head injuries on a path behind the 53 Degrees nightclub, near the University of Central Lancashire in Preston.

Police said the attack came after two earlier altercations involving a gang of youths in the area on Friday.

Five people - three men and two women - are now being questioned by officers.

It seems to have been a case of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time

Det Supt Graham Gardner

A woman was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of murder, a Lancashire Police spokesman said.

It means five people are now being held at Preston Police Station for questioning in connection with the death.

Officers still want to talk to students who may have been in the area at the time of the attack on Friday evening.

Det Supt Graham Gardner, leading the investigation, said: "What we do know is that there were at least two other altercations near to the students' union and the 53 Degrees Club around half an hour before the incident in which Mr Woods died.

"We urgently now need to hear from anybody who might have been the subject of these attacks, or any abuse from these people."

CCTV clues

Earlier, the detective said Mr Woods had suffered an "unprovoked and serious attack".

"It seems to have been a case of someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time," he said.

Det Supt Gardner added officers were speaking with university officials in a bid to publicise what had happened.

CCTV footage from the area is also being examined in a bid to identify those responsible for attacking Mr Woods.

Mr Woods, a father-of-six, was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident on Friday night.

Police said he was attacked on a pathway between Fylde Road and Adelphi Street at about 1915 BST.

R.I.P

My thoughts go out to his 6 kids and family/friends

I'm intrigued by this notion of 'wrong place at wrong time'. I think that that is covering something, especially when you consider the area of the attack.

I've been thinking about the phrase used by the Detective - "the wrong place at the wrong time."
Maybe he found himself in the midst of a fight and got hurt in the confusion.

He should have known better than to venture out of his house or even to have lived in the first place. Folks, try not to be in the wrong place at the wrong time okay.

Even if they catch the little b*******s who did this I doubt they'd get charged with murder. They always seem to get away with a manslaughter charge on the grounds that "they didn't mean to kill him." Just like the Damilola Taylor trial.

Yes, I hate it when they use that old trick.

How does one know when somewhere is safe to walk these days?

Attacks of this kind are becoming so commonplace .... it seems to me that society is breaking up, there is no sense whatsoever of community, belonging or even knowing right from wrong

I don't know where you got these figures but Abingdon in Oxfordshire only has a population of about 36,000.

Duhh ....appears you are right, that should read South Oxfordshire, not abingdon. It goes by "police force", not area. I just scanned for one that had the same population.

I live in preston and the group of youths who have allegedly killed the man are notorious for randomly beating people up for no reason, especially the ringleader. I feel so sorry for his family and it makes me furious to think that theres a good chance theyll get away with a few years in a cushy youth detention centre, whilst his six children are left without a dad. I have read there were cctv which captured the crime and I only hope justice will be done.

Chavs like that should be strangled at birth. Seriously.

Why does a poor little girl like Charlotte Wyatt have to suffer whilst these scumbags are given life?

Put them down or sterilise their parents.

I live in Preston and was so shocked when I heard about this. I go past 53 Degrees on the way to the city centre all the time and have never felt afraid. Now I'm feeling a bit wary. It's pathetic when you've got to think about where you can safely walk.
I feel so sorry for the victim and the family. I just hope they lock away the bastards who did this.

xx
