Red poppies are politically correct and Christians should wear white poppies

Apparently. What a load of old bull!

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/09112006/14...white-red.html

Christians should think about wearing white poppies to mark Remembrance Day, rather than red ones, a religious think tank has advocated. The group, called Ekklesia, believes the traditional red variety of poppy is "politically correct" - and less Christian than white ones. It says the red poppy implies redemption can come through war, whereas a white poppy would suggest redemption through Christian belief.

How ridiculous! Who has seen a white poppy? I haven't. Seen a purple one though.

Poppies were red because they were in Flander's Field. It has nothing to do with religion.

Why would you buy a poppy at all, of any colour, if you reject the validity of the sacrifice made by the soldiers in WW1?

Surely the white poppy is the "politically correct" symbol?

That's what I always though to. It doesn't remotely mean you can achieve redemption through war, whatever they mean by that.

What a load of old tosh!

By the way, I don't like the Scottish poppies as much as the English poppies, they are a bit weird looking and don't have a little green leaf on them!

Never seen a white poppy for sale. I realy wanted one in the '80s as Thatcher didn't like them.

I do wear the red one as both my grandads fought in the 1st world war.

I can't even believe there is such a thing as a religious think tank!

How absurd is that?

White poppies sound really pretty.

I don't know why everyone on TV HAS to wear one though.

And who got ridiculed a few weeks back for not wearing one?

Wearing the poppy isn't just about WWI either. It's about remembering all war victims all over the world. I don't wear the poppy for religious reasons. I wear it out of respect for those whose lives have been torn apart by war.

Personally, I wouldn't wear a white poppy if it meant I was displaying a religious symbol.

Basically the profits from white poppys go to the people selling the group that announced this. As they have little market share in the poppys stake they decided to jump onto the 'politically correct' bandwagon so more people buy their poppys, hence making them more moeny.

Poppycock

Ekklesia are a commercial organisation who have come up with some utter bollocks just to stir things up and get themselves some publicity.

from the PPU site

Quote:
War is a crime against humanity. I renounce war, and am therefore determined not to support any kind of war. I am also determined to work for the removal of all causes of war.’ PPU pledge
So why wear a white poppy on Rememberence day unless you wish to score a cheap political point at the expense of the war veterans

Quote:
If at Remembrance time we are to reclaim value from those lost lives, rather than give legitimacy to a system of values which destroyed them, we don’t need to be silent for two minutes. On the contrary: we need to speak up. We need to break up the silent conspiracy which perpetuates the delusion that war, and preparing for war, can bring about peace. PPU "Reclaiming the Silence"

You might wish to remember them with sympathy and respect, in light of the fact that they were conscripted.

Even if you believe war to be wrong you might still wish to commemorate their terrible deaths. The war was hardly their fault.

Poppies are niether political or religious. They are a simple way for all people to show thier respect for others who have gone before.

This is just over-the-top. It is no less respectful to wear the red poppy.

I don't even think wearing a poppy is solely about religion - its about all of us remembering the Soldiers of WW1 and the sacrifices that they made for their country.

Quite - and the red poppy was chosen as it dominated the fields of Flanders and no other reason as far as I am aware

Hee - even on this thread people can't agree about what red poppies signify. This is why I wouldn't wear one.

I *might* wear a white poppy, but like PamelaL am slightly put off by the Christianising of it
