Have the theme weeks worked?

I think the idea of having a theme week has kind of been hit and miss simply because a lot of the time the artist chosen have been fairly poor. I'm sure that we all know and love many of them but if we're honest not many of them have had more than two or three huge recognisable hits that today's audience can remember/relate to so most weeks a lot of people have been stuck singing songs that not a lot of people out there know.

Would you keep the theme weeks and if so how would you improve it? I think Beatles, Queen, Stones, Elvis etc would have been better. Guys that have a large catalogue of songs that people can relate to and know rather than leaving many acts out in the cold singing songs that they themselves are probably not even familiar with.

Certainly this year compared to last, there have been less enjoyment on a personal level because quite often I've not been that familiar with many of the songs being sung

I have no problem with allowing acts to perform on the results, although it would be better if they were modern day acts as oppose to Julio Iglesias, but don't make the show revolve around the themes.

X Factor has, IMO, been better than PI because you get a diversity of acts in it, as oppose to a typical "singing by numbers" all round average singer. No themes allows acts to show a more realistic representation of themselves and what they would do if they won. The best weeks have been those which allow a wide song choice, and the worst weeks devoted to one act, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, ABBA.

No, it's be a pretty shameless excuse for Sony/BMG to promote the albums of their artists, some of whom are looking a bit ropey. This week was a new low, with a seriously past his best Manilow MIMING on a singing talent show. Laughably bad.

Shamelessly awful and cynical, at least in it's present form.

I think they could have if they had themes like disco, rock, pop etc. rather than Lionel Ritchie, movie songs (?!) etc. Themes worked on Pop Idol.

i don't think they should do themes around an artist or band but different genre of music themes could be interesting as it can still offer varity within that genre of music
