Abdication broadcast tonight.

Ha, that got you wondering didn't it! Well, this isn't actually a major breaking news story, but just to let you know that tonight (Monday) at 10.45 p.m. BBC Parliament will be broadcasting King Edward VIII's abdication speech in full, marking the seventieth anniversary of the crisis.

It's a fifteen minute slot and I don't think it was anything like that long, nor was it filmed, so we will presumably get some background to the event too. I've no idea how they'll edit the introduction, but Sir John Reith, then BBC Director General, had wanted to introduce the former King as Mr Edward Windsor - however the title Prince Edward was eventually deemed appropriate. The broadcast was made from Windsor Castle and Reith later told the story that he was seated at the microphone to make the announcement, and as he vacated the chair to allow the ex-King to move in to make his speech, he accidentally kicked the table leg and this was obviously picked up by the microphone. The next morning, the press reported that Reith was so disgusted by the ex-King's actions that, having introduced him, he walked out and slammed the door! Which goes to show how you couldn't believe anything you read in the papers then either!

Tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 9.00 (repeated 12 midnight and 3.00 a.m. and Wednesday at 7.00 p.m) BBC4 has a documentary about the event.

Does anyone know what the music used at the end of the BBC 4 documentary abdication was last night? It was a Piano piece, pretty sure its from a film but I can't remember which exactly.

I've just watched the programme and noticed the Gattaca theme at least once in the programme.

Maybe it was another piece of music from Gattaca, or possibly from another Michael Nynam soundtrack, such as The Piano?

According to their "Have Your Say" page, BBC Four have had many requests about this paino piece and are trying to identify it.

Hope this helps!
