Markets

Do you love them? Which ones are your favourites?

I do. There are none here. When I was a fair bit younger, I used to help my then OH with a stall on Portobello Road market and, a couple of times, Greenwich market. We also used to go to Brick Lane and Bermondsey market to stock up. I loved it! I also used to spend a lot of time moseying around Camden.

During lunch, ahen I worked in the City, I used to like to go to Leadenhall Market and Petticoat Lane. It's one of the things I miss the most about London.

We have a market every saturday, but I haven't had a mooch around there in years. It's too busy for my liking, and you get elbowed in the ribs by lots of old ladies searching for bargains!

The Saturday markets my way are rather dull with stall after stall of cheap clothes.
I wish we had the sort of markets you see abroad.

I love markets. If there is one in a place I am visiting I'll always go and have a look. Some of the ones abroad are enormous. I like them because you ae mingling with regular people going about their business.

Is Leadenhall really a market now though ??? I thought it was just called that. I know when i used to walk through there to work they just had shops in the market .... no stalls (or was i looking in the wrong place ??).

I dont like markets really. I have memories of going to the market in derby with my nan, and it was full of old tat.

My mum and dad used to go to Basildon market on a Saturday, and that too was grotty (apart from good fruit and veg stalls) so i have never been to one without force.

Markets are full of shoddy goods, cheap crap, and rip-off merchants.

I had a blazing row with a marketeer once because he sold me a fake CD. There was no manufacturers ID code around the inside hole

It used to have open shop fronts with displays outside and ordinary shops when I worked near there so was a kind of market. It had a markety feel and isn't really like a shopping centre or shopping street but if you want to exclude it, that's fine. It is included in the tourist guides.

We are lucky here in Newark. We have a full market 3 days a week. There are about 50 stalls selling everything from fruit and veg, fresh bread, flowers and eggs, plus the usual clothes, magazines, sewing stuff etc. On two other days there are smaller markets selling second-hand and collectable goods plus a couple of veg stalls.

The markets are not only beneficial to the town residents but it also brings in people from the surrounding area.

That sounds wonderful. This used to be a market town and we're surrounded by farms and by artists and craftspeople who make their own stuff. There's a half-hearted Sat market in a warehouse garage which is dull and has c8 stalls but it's so dark and depressing. Then a couple of times a year, there's the French market which is always popular so why not the same thing run by local people? Perhaps it's opposition from shopkeepers.

You are also lucky in that Newark still has its original market square

My husband works in Loughborough which has a fairly good market - he buys our fruit there on a Thursday!

Our town has a market too which is ok - tbh I usually forget it's there apart from the once a month when it's a farmer's market and we generally have a mooch round to buy meat and eggs.

I love markets! I love the Christmas markets in France, the food market in Borough, the flower market in Columbia Road and Portobello Road market best of all but pretty much anywhere where there's dusty bric-a-brac and/or things to eat and I'm happy!
The markets here aren't up to much sadly but if you go early enough on a Sunday (or late enough on a Saturday night if you can handle it!) you can get some great records really cheaply.

Yes, it's a beautiful square which I think is one of the largest in England. It now has a new addition in the form of a Starbucks which has opened in a large, four-story Georgian building.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand it occupies a premises that had been empty and will be welcomed by tourists. On the other hand it might take away trade from the other excellent independent coffee-bars and cafés in town.

I went to Norwich years ago and stayed in a pub which overlooked the market. The market was great (and we liked Norwich too!).

I work just around the corner from Leadenhall Market. It is mostly just an outdoor shopping arcade but they do have stalls out on Thursday and Friday mostly selling homemade foodstuff and a few arty type stalls.

OT

I do remember being a teenager and loving going up the Roman on a Saturday and then The Lane on a Sunday morning, especially the weekend after my birthday.

I like the Sunday market in Cambridge, its all arts and crafts etc.

The best market I went to though, was in Munich.
