Newsie Bits

1. Big Game Television has been cleared of fraud allegations after the charges against it were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. The offices of the channel were raided by police in May over claims that it had been defrauding viewers by running up their phone bills. Officers from the City of London police economic crime department have been investigating the claims alongside the crown prosecution service and Ofcom for the last six months but this week announced the charges would not be pursued. (QuizTelly)

2. Al Jazeera Network has announced that it will launch its Documentary Channel on Monday 1st January 2007 at 12:00 GMT from its headquarters in Doha. This major new launch comes only six weeks after the successful launch of Al Jazeera English.
The new 24-hour Channel aims to become a leader in its field, championing the promotion of documentary culture in the Arabic world and beyond. From its unique position, Al Jazeera Documentary will pay particular attention to the Middle East with a special focus on the cultural diversity of its societies. As the first service of its kind in the region, Al Jazeera Documentary will broadcast programs focused on different aspects of human activity including social, political, cultural, scientific, historical, and environmental. More [This could be a Hotbird ™ only launch]

3. Skyisthebest reports; According to the Information TV website; "On February 5th 2007, we shall be launching our third channel, which will be called 'Info TV 2', and the two types of programming will be separated out." More Info He goes on, Therefore, 'Russia Today' should move to the News section of the EPG at some point before Monday 5th February, so that EPG number 182 is emptied ready for the relaunch of 'Info TV 2'.

4. The Walt Disney Company has agreed to buy North American Sports Network (NASN), according to the online portal Wall Street Journal. The move will help Disney televise more American sports in Europe and expand ESPN's presence in Europe. More

5. ITV is reportedly looking to sell digital channel Men and Motors. Broadcastnow.co.uk said ITV had declined to comment on its story that after discussing the channel's future for months and considering a merger with ITV4, ITV chiefs had now concluded that a sale was the preferred option. Broadcastnow.co.uk said sale plans were expected to be finalised early in the New Year, and would be overseen by ITV digital channels director Jonathan Lewis. Broadcasters that might be interested in acquiring the men's channel include Sky, ITV's original co-partner in the channel before ITV took full control two years ago; Five, which has recently embarked on its multi-channel strategy; and Flextech, ntl's digital channel provider and half owner of the UKTV digital channel portfolio with the BBC. (From; dtg.org.uk )

Electronics makers, film studios and retailers are promising to sell EVD discs and players. Full story here (petestan)

8. Sky's surprise purchase of a 17.9% slice of ITV prompted shares in the commercial broadcaster to slump more than 7% in early trading today, and triggered a furious complaint from Virgin founder Sir Richard Branson. Branson is the largest shareholder in ntl which is poised to discuss a merger with ITV. Now Sky is ITV's largest shareholder after Sky CEO James Murdoch on Friday spent £940m buying 696m shares at 135p per share, a 16.6% premium on ITV's closing price of 115¾p. Branson accused Sky of a "cynical attempt" to thwart ntl's expected merger with ITV. "Sky knows an ntl/ITV merger would enable the two companies together to compete on a more level playing field with their own business. Any merger of ITV's content with a distribution platform such as ntl's, would reinvigorate ITV as the leading commercial broadcaster in the UK and give it the strength to compete for premium programming and make the investment in quality programming, necessary to win back its audiences." 12. Ed Richards, chief executive of media regulator Ofcom, has unveiled proposals for the UK's largest spectrum auction. Spectrum in three bands could be used for new mobile television services, as well as mobile broadband wireless services. Announcing the proposals, Richards said: "Releasing more spectrum to the market will create new opportunities for innovation in wireless technologies, promoting competition and driving convergence." 13. The UK's continuing ongoing move towards total digital switchover will see Freeview overtake Sky in popularity in 2008, somewhat later than previously forecast, claims a new study from Datamonitor. The market analyst's figures show that digital terrestrial TV (DTT) services such as Freeview will exceed satellite offerings like Sky's within the next two years. This latest news from Datamonitor contradicts a forecast earlier this summer from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, which announced that Freeview would have the lead on Sky before the New Year. More Here

14. A survey of Which? Magazine subscribers suggest good reliability of digital set-top boxes, with an average of 89% up to four years old still functioning perfectly. But digital TV recorders seem to be less reliable, with one device in six requiring a repair over the past two years. More Here

15. UK officials have said that the digital TV switchover will not go ahead until 2009 in parts of Cumbria, because a new transmitter needs to be built at Caldbeck. The Border TV region, which covers Cumbria and South West Scotland, was scheduled to become the first in the UK to switch over to digital TV in 2008. The new transmitter should be in operation by June 2009. 2. Sony is giving consumer electronics rival Toshiba a six-month head start in Japan's next-generation DVD format war. Sony said it would launch its Blu-ray high-definition DVD player—which can also record—in Japan in October. Toshiba's rival HD-DVD players went on sale in Japan in March. The Blu-ray launch will be accompanied by the release of 75 movie titles in the Blu-ray disc format, including Swordfish, Syriana and The Da Vinci Code. By that time Toshiba is expected to have up to 150 HD-DVD titles on the market in Japan and Europe. More

3. The number of households watching high-definition television (HDTV) programming is rising rapidly and will continue to do so for years, according to a new report from market research Company, In-Stat. The technology specialist's new data predicts that the worldwide number of HDTV homes will rise from 15m in mid-2006 to 20.3m by the end of this year. However, the growth will occur in only a few countries because many nations still lack HDTV. Full Story

4. Toshiba's president says the Japanese consumer electronics giant still favours a unified format for the next generation of DVDs, despite the recently launched format war between the Toshiba-backed HD-DVD and Blu-ray standard promoted by rival Sony. Toshiba and Sony attempted to collaborate last year on a unified standard, but talks broke down when each party insisted that their format was the only reasonable way forward. (DTG.org)

Other Stuff

The first Freeview Playback-branded digital TV recorders will be in shops in time for Christmas. Freeview launched its digital TV recorder strategy in May after research suggested that while consumers had high interest in being able to record digital programmes there was little awareness of the tape-free recording technology, resulting in low take-up of digital terrestrial digital TV recorders. (DTG.Org)

Cathode ray tube (CRT) sets will continue to make up the majority of televisions during the next two years, but flat-panel displays will continue to grow in popularity, according to the latest findings. A recent study by IMS Research—entitled The Worldwide Market for Television Sets—estimates that 2006 will be the first year during which worldwide sales revenues from flat screens will exceed those from sales of CRT sets. More

Consumer electronics giants Sharp and Sony have unveiled a range of new liquid crystal display (LCD) TV sets in time for the all-important pre-Christmas shopping rush. Sharp, which is fighting to regain its LCD market leading position, is to offer two versions each of its new Aquos brand at 52 inches, 46 inches and 42 inches. Sony said it would launch nine new LCD models in Japan including a 52-inch set. More Here

Just a sugestion: This regular thread is usefull, but how about on all the tests showing, indicate which ones are FTA, which ones are FTV and which ones require a Sky subscription?

It should be fairly obvious for most of the channels which of the channels are fta ftv or pay. In the main, tests are only available to the appropriate level of subscription so on the rare occasions sports tests appear they can only be seen by sports subscribers. There are oddities - like 7505 being available to fta boxes showing 5US for weeks.

ZEE Sports to launch in UK in coming days

Tests of ZEE Sports has currently been screening a preview still (pictured above) of a forthcoming football match 'Peerless Federation Cup'. Visual and audio tests can be viewed by tuning manually on Sky Digital using the following frequency: 11.343 (V) under the label "52355".

Recently ZEE Network bought a 50% stake in Dubai broadcaster Ten Sports, which has resulted in ZEE Sports gaining access to some of Ten Sports biggest sporting properties.

ZEE Sports UK will no doubt screen Indian football, which ZEE has a ten-year exclusive deal with; furthermore, ZEE Network UK also holds global rights to Indian cricket played on neutral ground.

Ten Sports on the other hand holds rights to cricket played in Sri Lanka, Pakistan and West Indies.

Just checked on 2 fta receivers.
That label isn't showing up.
Checked both horizontal and vertical.
Unless it is using the old SAW label, which is a blank, black screen,at present,or its not testing at present.

Oops ,just checked the BizAsia link,it is the SAW label.

Hope this is the right place to ask this..

Does anyone know the Frequency and Polarisation numbers for ITV2 +1 and ITV3 +1 channels?

I'd like to add them via 'other channels'
