SKY Channels, etc; ..Week #1.2
Bits of Radio news 1. GMG Radio has announced the launch date of Scotland's first classic rock station, which is set to take over from Q96. 96.3 Rock Radio will officially launch on Next Monday 8th January 2007 across Glasgow and Renfrew/Dunbartonshire on FM and across the west of Scotland on DAB. 2. Ofcom has extended the closing date for applications for the Herts, Beds and Bucks digital multiplex licence. Originally the deadline was 13th March but bids have an extra two weeks to fine tune their proposals. The new closing date is 3.00pm on Wednesday 28th March 2007. Full Stoey 3. DRM radios now on sale in UK. This Twickenham based company are now stocking the Morphy Richards radio. (D.Porter) 4. GMG Radio has conditionally acquired all the radio assets of the SAGA group for an undisclosed sum. The news comes just months after GMG bought Century Radio and now gives the company 12 analogue radio stations across the UK, three of which are based in Glasgow.(Full story) 5. The Kingdom Radio Group have put their West Lothian station River FM on the market. It would leave the group with just one station, having sold The Edge in Lanarkshire to Mark Page 18 months ago. River FM launched just over three years ago from studios in Livingston. (radiotoday) 6. Virgin Radio chief executive Fru Hazlitt has called on the radio industry to lobby Ofcom for a 2010 switch off of the AM frequency. More here (Sub Req’d) 7. Ofcom has signaled the eventual demise of FM radio after concluding that other services such as mobile television could make more efficient use of the spectrum. In a discussion document on the future of radio, the media regulator said that it would also look at whether AM spectrum could be released for other uses; if radio stations should adhere to rigid formats and whether changes should be made to ownership rules. The potential phasing out of FM radio has been pushed to the forefront of the agenda following the rapid growth in digital radio. More 8. Ofcom needs to decide which of the four applications for Aberdeen will best suit the area. Real Radio has submitted an extension of their Central Scotland station and CanWest propose an adult alternative, whilst Aurora FM and Waves Radio propose an all-service format for a wider age group. (From Radio Today ) * * * * * * Newsie Bits 1. Sky is to launch a new video-on-demand service that will allow viewers to access a range of programmes through Sky+ boxes as the satellite broadcaster announced that it had installed more than 2m of the recorders. The new VoD service, which will launch later this year, will be available to more than 1m Sky+ and Sky HD customers through the use of additional recording capacity on the hard drive of newer boxes. The service will allow viewers to choose from a selection of the week's top programmes on demand. Other new enhancements to be launched this year will include the ability to use the internet to set recordings. More (tony le mesmer) 2. Big Game Television has been cleared of fraud allegations after the charges against it were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service. The offices of the channel were raided by police in May over claims that it had been defrauding viewers by running up their phone bills. Officers from the City of London police economic crime department have been investigating the claims alongside the crown prosecution service and Ofcom for the last six months but this week announced the charges would not be pursued. (QuizTelly) 3. Skyisthebest reports; According to the Information TV website; "On February 5th 2007, we shall be launching our third channel, which will be called 'Info TV 2', and the two types of programming will be separated out." More Info He goes on, Therefore, 'Russia Today' should move to the News section of the EPG at some point before Monday 5th February, so that EPG number 182 is emptied ready for the relaunch of 'Info TV 2'. 4. The Walt Disney Company has agreed to buy North American Sports Network (NASN), according to the online portal Wall Street Journal. The move will help Disney televise more American sports in Europe and expand ESPN's presence in Europe. More 5. ITV is reportedly looking to sell digital channel Men and Motors. Broadcastnow.co.uk said ITV had declined to comment on its story that after discussing the channel's future for months and considering a merger with ITV4, ITV chiefs had now concluded that a sale was the preferred option. Broadcastnow.co.uk said sale plans were expected to be finalised early in the New Year, and would be overseen by ITV digital channels director Jonathan Lewis. Broadcasters that might be interested in acquiring the men's channel include Sky, ITV's original co-partner in the channel before ITV took full control two years ago; Five, which has recently embarked on its multi-channel strategy; and Flextech, ntl's digital channel provider and half owner of the UKTV digital channel portfolio with the BBC. (From; dtg.org.uk ) 6. 'Wild' will replace Adventure One in the UK from 1st March, 2007" more (GrahamBCFC/skyisthebest) 7. Sky has announced a ground-breaking alliance with Google to offer Sky's broadband customers a suite of new search, communications and video services. Under a series of multi-year agreements—financial terms were not disclosed—Sky will be Google's first partner for the new services, which will be tailored and branded for Sky's broadband platform More 8. This from skyisthebest Digital channel CBBC could be on air until 10pm under plans being considered by the BBC children's controller who wants to extend CBBC's hours. Full Story This also means that BBC THREE would be able to extend its hours if timesharing ended, In addition, its possible that CBeebies and BBC FOUR might stop timesharing and extend their hours as well.... 9. Ed Richards, chief executive of media regulator Ofcom, has unveiled proposals for the UK's largest spectrum auction. Spectrum in three bands could be used for new mobile television services, as well as mobile broadband wireless services. Announcing the proposals, Richards said: "Releasing more spectrum to the market will create new opportunities for innovation in wireless technologies, promoting competition and driving convergence." Ofcom will release 215 MHz of spectrum in three licensed bands: 2500-2690 MHz, 2010-2025 MHz and 2290-2300 MHz. Full story 10. The UK's continuing ongoing move towards total digital switchover will see Freeview overtake Sky in popularity in 2008, somewhat later than previously forecast, claims a new study from Datamonitor. The market analyst's figures show that digital terrestrial TV (DTT) services such as Freeview will exceed satellite offerings like Sky's within the next two years. This latest news from Datamonitor contradicts a forecast earlier this summer from the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising, which announced that Freeview would have the lead on Sky before the New Year. More Here 11. A survey of Which? Magazine subscribers suggest good reliability of digital set-top boxes, with an average of 89% up to four years old still functioning perfectly. But digital TV recorders seem to be less reliable, with one device in six requiring a repair over the past two years. More Here 12. UK officials have said that the digital TV switchover will not go ahead until 2009 in parts of Cumbria, because a new transmitter needs to be built at Caldbeck. The Border TV region, which covers Cumbria and South West Scotland, was scheduled to become the first in the UK to switch over to digital TV in 2008. The new transmitter should be in operation by June 2009. (Source: Lakeland Radio/Medianetwork) Digital UK has announced switchover timings for transmitters serving more than 4m households in West Country, Wales and Granada television regions under the Government's 2008-2012 switchover timetable; Digital UK, the independent body leading switchover on behalf of UK broadcasters, issued the following timings for West Country, Wales and Granada: a. Item in full HD SECTION (HiDef) 1. Some of our readers are worried about this 2. Toshiba's president says the Japanese consumer electronics giant still favours a unified format for the next generation of DVDs, despite the recently launched format war between the Toshiba-backed HD-DVD and Blu-ray standard promoted by rival Sony. Toshiba and Sony attempted to collaborate last year on a unified standard, but talks broke down when each party insisted that their format was the only reasonable way forward. (DTG.org) 3. The number of households watching high-definition television (HDTV) programming is rising rapidly and will continue to do so for years, according to a new report from market research Company, In-Stat. The technology specialist's new data predicts that the worldwide number of HDTV homes will rise from 15m in mid-2006 to 20.3m by the end of this year. However, the growth will occur in only a few countries because many nations still lack HDTV. Full Story Other Stuff Cathode ray tube (CRT) sets will continue to make up the majority of televisions during the next two years, but flat-panel displays will continue to grow in popularity, according to the latest findings. A recent study by IMS Research—entitled The Worldwide Market for Television Sets—estimates that 2006 will be the first year during which worldwide sales revenues from flat screens will exceed those from sales of CRT sets. ![]() That Gaming & Dating section is getting very thin on the ground isn't it? Numbers 844, 846, 851, 852, 853, 854 and 855 all now empty. 846 will probably return as Sky Poker I would've thought though - unless that has to launch on 857.QuizCall is definitely not gone completely though - it's been confirmed it's back on Five, Five US and Five Life mid-late January, so it'll be heading straight for the 200s in a few weeks time! Anyone know what transponder 'Sky Box Office 745' is on?
Well didn't expect six channels to get removed today, I had three down for removal, wonder the new EPG contract is the issue for some of the others? |

Speculation...
At least The Word has been removed because the video form is now found on 771.
Channel 854 was showing "Monte Carlo Roulette" same, as 842 (Fortune Fever) and 850 (YouPlay TV). I predict that either 842 or 850 will be removed soon because it is showing the same programme. It's what happen to 854. ITV Play could be moved to 844, and then Gaming section would be from 840 - 850. Then, move Dating to 851 - 854. Move:- Audi Channel to 189 Teachers' TV to 191 Pub Channel to 221 (When Solent TV launches on 219) Sky Venue to 222 Open Access to 173 Open Access 2 to 174 Psychic TV to 147 Channel 4 (Wales & ROI) to 136 BBC1 (ROI) to 140 BBC2 (ROI) to 141 More4 stays at 142 More4+1 to 143 E4 to 144 E4 to 145 BBC HD to 117 And from 860, ITV Regions & STV, UTV Rename "Specialist" in Sky Guide to "Regions" Last edited by TV Ideas : 03-01-2007 at 12:50. |

Sky cannot just keep moving channels around - many channels have their advertising set up months in advance with their channel numbers on it.
Last time around for the big shuffle we had the best part of a years notice. I would expect the same for a big shuffle around for the entertainment section |
