Highways Agency - Improvements?

Ways in which you think the HA can improve the UK's roads?

Dual the A46, A52 and A453. Convert the A14 to motorway.

My suggestion: Dual the A1 near the Scottish Border.

Actually have proper diversions when doing roadworks. Coming back from Aston the other day, we had to follow a diversion route which involved going down an unlit country lane for 10 minutes, only to find that too was blocked off at the end.

The HA can't do that, they are only responsible for maintaining trunk roads, and so they can only divert onto equivalent roads.

4 or 5 lanes on the M4 approach to London....it's total idiocy that one of the main arterial routes into London covering most of Western England gets shrunk to 2 lanes plus a bus lane. It's almost always got tailbacks.

London Ringways would be nice too, as well as finishing the London ends of the M1, M11, and M23.

Imagine free-flowing traffic from the M4 all the way upto the M1 and beyond......shame they didn't go through with the plan all the way.

Yeah, it is, plus more bonus it would flatten most of London, considering i don't live there... yay... the M25 would have been better too, as it stands, it's a bit of R4 joined to a bit of R3, that explains the mess at the M25/M26/A21 jct where you have to turn off the M25 to stay on, etc etc. And I do happen to have a soft spot for what was the "M41" haha what could have been there!

The one thing they should be doing is looking to take away roundabouts on main A roads.

Around here there are numerous examples of roundabouts that cause congestion. If they took them out things would be much better

Examples are the A50 - 4 roundabouts between Meir and the M1 - all these do is cause congestion. Then theres the A38 through Derby and the horrors that are J24 and J28 of the M1!

Quite a few busy A roads could do with duelling - examples include the A453 between Oxford and Swindon (as mentioned by an earlier poster), and the entire A303 between Exeter and the M23 - although to be fair I think the A303 is already in the pipline.

Also the A509 between Rushden and Peterborough could do with an extra lane.

Totally agree on that one, Some bits don't need to be a motorway but some of it does.

J28 is better since the recent improvements, especially the escape lane from Mansfield to the M1 South.

The whole 23a/24/24a is a mess, the HA's revamp for that under the M1 widening scheme is encouraging. I have my own ideas... also includes a dualled A453.

That's a long road? Nottingham to Birmingham then multiplexes with the A34 to Oxford? You mean the A420 don't you

The A453 is from Birmingham to Nottingham. If you mean the A420, it isn't a trunk route.

You mean the M3, surely?

Now you've totally lost me. The A509 is from Milton Keynes to Kettering going near, but not to, Rushden. To go from Rushden to Peterborough you would use the A45 to Thrapston and the A605 (which also isn't trunk).

Anyway, those roads still ought to be made duel!

I think it would be quite good to duel the A1 against something like the A38... maybe the A303? Duelling roads is quite cool considering they don't move

Seriously... Who really uses the A1 between Morpeth and Haddington apart from local traffic and traffic from the NE to Edinburgh? The signposted route from England to Edinburgh is up the A74M and then the A702.

Whoops. Dualling.

The A167 needs dualling as well between Newton Aycliffe and Durham.
