Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em

My favourite comedy series of all time so bought the DVD boxed set with every episode made. One has a scene deleted though. It's when they're moving house and the removal van crashes.Frank ends up in a barrel of tarmac. In the original version he emerges covered in tarmac to see a black couple and says "me white man,me not black man,me English" Okay I assume it's been cut as it can be seen as racist. However the last time it was on TV,only three years ago,the scene was left in.Strange as these DVD'S came out a few years ago.
Anyone else a big fan of Frank then? My 11 year-old daughter is too,can recap every episode word for word.

I love Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em, I haven't yet got the DVDs though.

I have got a lot of other BBC DVDs and I've noticed there are quite a few edits, which is annoying. You expect DVDs to at least have the fully complete episodes.

Frank Spencer's a legend in this house; my husband, kids and I have spent hours rolling about with laughter at Some Mothers Do Ave Em

I had no idea there were DVDs but I'll be sure to get hold of them.

Yes I noticed that as well, they also cut short the end of the third series episode Moving House. In it they let the cameras run and you see Michael Crawford, Jean Boht and Glynn Edwards laughing at the end.

It's also a shame they don't have any of the outtakes.

It also amazes me that Michael Crawford did those stunts, the roller skating and motorbike stunts are exceptional!

He did some quite amazing stunts - I'm surprised that the original choices for the role of Frank were Ronnie Barker and Norman Wisdom!

My favourite episode was when he lost control while wearing skates.
He grabbed onto the bus pole & the conductress charged him.

That looked a dangerous stunt.

Ronnie Barker seemed to be first choice for a lot of roles in the 70's. David Nobbs originally wanted him to be Reggie Perrin!! Norman Wisdom was quite physical so you could almos picture him doing it.

The thing is though that the stunts were Crawford's idea, which would explain why it was offered to Barker. The physical comedy of the show wasn't there in the original drafts.

I remember an interview with Raymond Allen and he was writing the episode where Frank goes to the family planning meeting and Crawford said to leave him 5 minutes at the end. Then they came back with the roller skating stunt.

I love that one but I always thought the motorbke one gets overlooked. I love it when you see him talking on the radio then the camera pulls back and his sitting side saddle on the motorbike hitting it with a spanner. Then the carnage when he smashes through the window and demolishes the office! Just pure brilliance!!

Also notice how the desk doesn't break first time so Crawford gives it a quick whack when he goes underneath it.

The theme tune is enough to fill me with terror, that show used to scare me crazy when I was a kid!

Yeah think you can either buy each series and the Christmas specials separately or the box set is better value.I got it reduced in Borders.I'm old enough to remember when they were first shown on BBC1,8.30 Thursdays.I was in my early teens in the early 70's.The zoo and skating episode's my favourite too.

I also own the full DVD set. We never tire of watching Frank Spencer's mishaps in my house! One of the funniest episodes is 'The Flying Lesson'.

"What is your position?"

"I'm up here!"

There is a scene at the end of an episode-I cannot remember which -where Franks latest job is self employed electrician. He arrives at a house, walks in, the door closes, and few seconds later the house explodes.Frank emerges with the bewildered owner and says "well thats all I can do for the moment".This scene always has me in stitches and just about sums up the character.

It's a great series, just as funny if not funnier than the so-called 'classic' sitcoms of that time like Fawlty Towers, Porridge etc. but I think it will always be underrated. People just think of the stunts when there are tons of brilliantly funny moments without the stunt craziness.

It is very underrated and never makes the top end of comedy series polls etc but will always be my favourite. There are so many brilliant lines.

Not sure why that scene should be cut from a DVD, bearing in mind that I've got a boxed set of "Love thy Neighbour".

If it has been cut on grounds of colour it's probably because it's a white man who looks black in the tradition of the idiots who banned the Black and White Minstrels.
