Broadband speed - slow on PC but fast on laptop ?! - Broadband Internet

Can anyone explain why the 'speed' (for downloads and opening up pages) are much faster on a laptop rather than a PC ?

The PC is about 7 years old (brought brand new - pentium 3, running Windows 98 SE).

Laptop is about 2 and a half years old, running Windows XP.

Does the spec. of the PC have any effect on download speeds, or could it be something else ?

And I've just realised that on some days, the connection is fine but on others, it's a headache (reminds me of dial-up...

).

Any tips ?

Have you run spyware cleaners and the like? It could be that slowing it down.

Yes any of the following: slow and/or fragmented disks can slow things down. the ppeed of the processor, amount of real memory, whether or not the NIC is a Bus Master or a Slave.
