Should Sony Have Started With A Clean Slate?

Would it been better for all of us if Sony just said "The new PS3 will not play any old games. Keep your old console for those".

They would not then have to compromise on the controllers which seem to me no different from PS2 (minus the cable) and allowed them to concentrate on new powerful features with zero compatibility problems.

It would have also reduced the price and time for product backward compatibility testing.

Just a thought

Backwards compatability is a big selling point though... All consoles offer backwards compatibility at the moment, so they have to keep up.

Removing the £20 quid PS2 chip was a bad idea IMO. It'll cost them a lot more in PS2 emulation in the long run.

Good selling point when it works
Nintendo never seem to worry about playing old games and do quite well.

Wii -> Gamcube / NES / SNES / Megadrive / Turbo Grafx (OK it costs but never the less it plays em and there is scope for more)

The DS plays GBA games which is awesome for me, as the GBA has possibly one of the best handheld games catalogues ever. Plus I never owned a GBA....so now I am benefiting from all those GBA classics! Handhelds are different to home consoles though, as graphics and power don't matter.

Backward compatibility is overrated on home consoles. I don't think I've played any PS1 games on my PS2.....plus my PS1 is chipped and I've got US/Japanese games on it, so they wouldnt work anyway. You typically buy a new home console to look forward. It's handy I guess that the Wii can play all the Cube games, but I'd still buy it if it wasn't.
