Mutton Dressed as Lamb
Last night I was almost physically ill at the sight of my neighbour, who is a 40 something grandmother.
She was going out for a night on the town with her 21 year old daughter. Im not being cruel here, but I would not even set foot out of the house with my mother if she was dressed like that. She was wearing the skimpiest mini skirt I have ever seen, it was one of those black pleated things, knee high black stilleto boots and a corest top. Im not saying once a woman hits 40 she should suddenly start to dress all frumpish, but she looked utterly ridiculous. To be honest, even an 18 year old would struggle to pull that look off without looking like a cheap scrubber. She does have a good figure for a woman of her age, but thats no excuse. Just the mere thought of her wrinkled saggy knees and wobbly orange peel thighs makes my stomach churn. It was not a pleasant sight, and Im not sure any man would be caught dead trying to chat her up. Why is it that so many 40 something women think they can get away with dressing like teens? I used to work at New Look and see middle aged women buying sparkle boob tubes and mini skirts all the time. Why? |

I honestly don't think that they think.
I suspect some women hang onto their youth so tightly they forget to look around now and again and see that they're not as young as they once were. I guess she can wear what she wants, but someone ought to point it out to her so she can at least make a more informed decision about her image. I'm all for growing old disgracfully, but I intend to keep my cellulite covered whilst I do it!!

leave the lady alone I reckon. If she is okay with it what are you worrying about it for
Life's too short, live and let live and worry about yourself and not her sounds like she is out there having fun and good luck to her. If you don't like don't look

Looks to me like the women, has a nicer daughter than your mum.
Why do some people feel the need to judge others so much ? |

I don't see the harm in women who want to show off their bodies in skimpy clothes, its their choice. I'd rather see a woman with a nice body wearing revealing clothes than a larger woman who is younger wearing the same.
Question: If this woman had been at the gym and wearing skimpy shorts and bra top what would you have said then, should she cover it all up just because she happens to be in her 40s. Last edited by Silas Marner : 25-03-2007 at 15:06. |

If you've got it flaunt it, why shouldn't she dress as she wants. I mean she's so old in her forties and a Grandmother, leave her alone and as ohmygosh says don't look.

Maybe your neighbour was going out in clothes that make her feel comfortable and attractive? Maybe she doesn't give a toss about being chatted up? Maybe her daughter is proud of her, and told her she looked good? I'm a woman nearing 50, much of the time I dress like a 14 year old boy- baggy jeans, trainers, hoodies etc. Doesnt make me a style icon, but I feel comfortable in these clothes. When I 'dress my age' - suits, heels and (eek!) make-up, I feel as tho I'm going for a job interview! Relax child, everyone is different! If she aint stealing your milk, she aint hurting you. |

Sparklebabe,
Perhaps you should dress up and go out for a night on the town rather than stare out the window & down your nose at your neighbour who was going out to enjoy herself. Why the hell should she not dress the way she wants it's not doing anyone any harm is it? |

I'm not sure the OP is getting the responses she was after.
I had a big long essay to write but I couldn't be bothered really and everyone has already said what needs to be said. |

You can't always tell if something suits you anyway, I bought a dress recently without trying it on - it was beautiful in the shop window but once I got it home and put it on I realised I'm too old for it and it was a mistake. No one is perfect I see a lot of people dressing badly for their shape, age, situation whatever.. it's why most of us aren't professional stylists at the end of the day!

Strikes me that I don't care what other folk wear, it's not for me to tell them what they look like because it's not my business. I do know that if I had a neighbour and I knew she peered out of her window and tutted at what I wear it would make me laugh my head off. Especially if I was going out on a Saturday night and she was sat at home. |

Setting aside my recent foray into overly youthful mini dresses (and I think I'll even shame facedly admit to buying some leg warmers some months back!) my worst fashion mistakes were when I was much younger - age teaches you not to care but it also teaches you not to wear leggings! She can't look any worse than the 18-25 yr olds with fat arses and stella bellies hanging out of there ill fitting clothes, now that is shameful.

SparkleBabe, I do kind of see your point.
Its like the fat girls that wear tiny wee tops...do they honestly think it looks good when they look in the mirror? I mean dont get me wrong, it doesnt affect my life, they can dress how they like, I just wonder WHY sometimes... |

Maybe the problem here is, that she has a good figure and can carry the young look off, and you are jealous of that fact? Get a life!!!!!!!
