What film would you say is the better "The Shawshank Redemption" or "The Green Mile"?

Both stories written by Stephen King & both set around a prison enviroment

After watching "The Shawshank Redemption" last night I'd have to say this is the better film. While i did enjoy "The Green Mile" "Shawshank" just blew me away."

Shawshank in my view had the better storyline & a great bunch of Characters.

What about you guys & girls?

"The Shawshank Redemption" for me.

As you say, "The Green Mile" was good, but not as good.

Shawshank every time. It has such a strong message (however much shit you have to wade through, you can always make it!). And Morgan Freeman is so fantastic in it.

The Green Mile by a mile!
Didn't rate the Shawshank Redemption much - it was OK.

Shawshank for me and Mr Batmobile too. Love them both, but Shawshank is less sickly sentimental and more subtle. the message is stronger too.

I've watched both films in the last week, although I've seen them before.

And as good as 'The Green Mile' was, I was taken in much more by 'The Shawshank Redemption'.

I think the lead roles of Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman make the film for me. Not that I'm saying 'The Green Mile' was poorly acted, but Shawshanks acting, was much more superior.

Both great, but Shawshank is far superior IMO.

Shawshank easily.

As far as Frank Darabont films go, i think the Majestic with Jim Carrey is better than Green Mile, although not Shawshank. Majestic & Man on the Moon, 2 very underrated Carrey films. (slightly off topic...)

yeah, I agree, Carrey is a very underrated actor, he's done some fabulous roles (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind being my favourite). The Majestic is amazing, and I watched Man on the Moon for the first time last week - what can I say apart from "wow". I went on youtube and watched some clips of Kaufman afterwards and couldn't believe how well Carrey had caught him.

Back on topic - The Shawshank Redemption for me

Green Mile - not only was it THAT good, it was astoundingly brilliantly GOOD. So much so, that I have never watched it since first viewing it, nor will I ever watch it again, to keep it that brilliant in my memory.

Shawshank was boring and I never thought that much of it at all.

Shawshank is one of the best films ever. Green Mile is just good.

I will also agree on the off topic subject that Carrey is a good and underrated actor. He's a better actor than comedian in my opinion, I saw the Number 23 the other day, very average film but he was great in it.

I haven't seen either in a couple of years but I have to say that from what I can remember I'd have to say that Shawshank wins this contest. The Green Mile was a very good film but having been a fan of the book I felt that something as always was lost in the translation from page to screen.

The Shawshank Redemption by a very long way. I thought The Green Mile was just idiotic, with a ridiculous story line and a daft ending. A waste of Tom Hanks's talent.

Can't bear Tom Hanks. Hated him in everything since Philadelphia - which was great. I have already replied to this though but just wanted to add that because it is probably one of the reasons I rate Shawshank far higher. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are superior to him. I think I was put off by his sobbing at the Oscars and that dire film Forrest Gump. but I digress...

Shawshank. Fantastic film. Green Mile was okay, but didn't have the same effect on me.

Shawshank is one I could watch over and over (and have!!) whereas Green Mile is good, but in all honesty I am always deterred by - 3 hours & Tom Hanks - plus from memory I just didn't care about the characters in Green Mile - whereas when lawyer from Ally McBeal had evidence of Robbins innocence and was subsequently killed, that mattered - unlike any event within Green Mile (TBH can only really remember MCD getting weak after doing his 'bit')
