US Catholics complaining about sculpture of Christ on the cross

I thought Catholics quite liked things like that? What's more, it's made of chocolate, and I know quite a few Catholics who like chocolate too. I don't understand people some times......

It's in bad taste (pardon the pun), and makes a bit of a mockery of someone's terrible suffering.

Does that apply to all such statues or just this one? Is it the medium that makes it a mockery? Or the name?

I think they should hang it in a small chocolate church, and have a chocoloate-covered priest give short Easter services (call it "50% cocoa mass"). No?

Are you sure the bad taste isn't due to the fact it's made from American chocolate?

"My Sweet Lord".

For a better view than the rather coy BBC photo: http://www.cosimocavallaro.com/

They must have something to complain about and try to control, or their lives will be less meaningful.

I actually quite like the piece. It's pretty good.

One of the Catholic Church leaders in England stated not long after Jerry Springer: The Opera was aired that "not even God is above being lampooned. The followers of Christ must accept that."

I'm not religious but he could be trying to say the whole meaning of Easter has been overtaken by greedy chocolate eaters. (not that i don't enjoy a nibble myself!)

I think they should have been more respectful of this time of year, it's all been calculated to get media coverage and get US catholics up in arms.

I'm not actually sure what's disrespectful of it. It's a sculpture of Christ.

Well if Catholics just took less offense at everything, it probably wouldn't get the media coverage. What happened to the great Christian value of "turn the other cheek"?

No it doesn't. It depicts the balance of greed, religious iconography and people's beliefs, or some crap like that.

I bet it's a huge dilemma for the likes of plump Catholics - do you kiss the feet and take a nibble or just plain worship it?

Of all the things to get your knickers in a twist about, surely this is pretty low down the list?

Well maybe if they hadn't brutally hijacked this time of year from the pagans a few hundred years ago, they wouldn't have anything to get up in arms about...

Bring on the chocolate blasphemy!!

I know this is not quite the same thing, but I've just remembered something my mother used to take offence at when I was a kid (she's fairly staunch CofE, but not really the type to take offence at casual blasphemy and the like, which is why this strikes me as quite odd)- she didn't like crosses with Christ on them, as she said the whole point of the symbol was that he (or even He) was no longer there, having risen again.

My thoughts exactly!

Have you noticed how the confectioners are moving away from the traditional egg (symbol of rebirth & the circle of life) towards any old animal?

What with Easter cards too the whole thing is descending into the same crass commercialisation that has ruined Christmas.

Aren't all animals born and then eventually die?

They already drink the blood of Christ and eat his flesh. Is licking his naked body really so much worse?

Peaceful cannibalism, if you just look at the eating of Christ!
