Virgins letter arrived this morning

Nice to see a timely letter about the broadband increase being rolled out in may.
Whats even better is that they actually state that certain modems may need upgrading.
When ntl brought out the 10mb i had endless arguments with them before writing to head office in hook and management got me a new modem within a couple of weeks.
I think this is a significant improvement.
(slightly soured by the fact that there is a charge to get a modem that copes with it but still a big improvement)
From the letter i see there is an updates page on the website which i hadnt noticed.

I got the letter early last week. They still haven't updated the website listed to say when it's rolling out or which modems are compatible.

I had that letter the other week too.

Also received another yesterday mentioning the Sky channels again (saying they were putting money into other things now) - arrived with a card added listing the 1p promotion films you could vote for - this weeks 'blockbuster' promotion is the only week a newly made film could be chosen, the rest are years old.

Yes, I noticed that too. I guess it was asking too much for any newish films to be available in later weeks of the "promotion". Still, we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth-they'll still only cost a penny.

why do you need the extra speed??????? i use P2P software to get what i used to get via Skyone and even though i have the potential get get 1.2mBper secs (10mb line), it never goes over 400KB so the extra from a 20mb line will NEVER be used - except on the rare occassion i download direct from a bluechip company.

one word, newsgroups, maxed at 10.2 constantly, I'm sure I'll get double when it changes. P2P is a nightmare in so many ways, and SLOOOOW.

You will probably notice that i didnt say i needed the extra speed. The comment was more about the difference in service between ntl when they increased from 5 to 10 and virgin with the current increase planned.

have to agree with blaggard - newsgroups are far superiour to p2p rubbish - esp with full speeds. I get about 1200kbps speed atm, i am looking forward to getting 2400kbps soon

Remember the maximum speed you get from a P2P connection is determined by the maximum UPLOAD speed of the host computer you are connected to, in other words you may be able to receive data at 1.2MB per sec but the uploader may only be able to supply at 400KB

Yes, but its going to take a LOT of uploaders to match a maxed out newsgroup connection. I rarely get my 10MB maxed out with the Blueyonder newsgroup servers though, it only seems to be giving me 3 simultaneous connections these days.

No. That was a different letter. I've not had the 'broadband speed upgrade' one yet either

Yes, just realised it was Kitano's post about the letter from Branson about Sky channels that I responded to earlier.
I haven't had the broadband letter either and I'm ex Telewest.

This newsgroup stuff sounds interesting - I'm guessing it's alt.binaries something-or-other...?

How do they escape the wrath of the MPAA and the like - surely the files are located on a central server, than can be the subject of a DMCA take-down? Or the downloader could be identified through subpoenaed IP logs?

I only ask from the perspective of how the legal system deals with such things....
