What version of Windows are you using?

Try doing this and tell us what you get:

Go to Start > Run* > Type in "command" in the window (no commas) > In the black box type in:

ping 192.168.1.1

If you get 4 packets received, then it's connected to the router.

Then try:

ping www.bbc.co.uk

See if you get the same results.

Also, what's the status of the Ethernet connection? Is it "Limited or no connectivity"?

*if Vista, just type in command in the search box at the bottom.

That means it's not connected, or something is blocking it.

If you're on XP, go to Control Panel > (Network and Internet Connections) > Network connections > What does it say on Local Area Connection?

Consider this - click

If you are running a software firewall, such as "ZoneAlarm" and want to share services, such as files and printers, you will need to "trust" your local area network before PCs can see each other. Instructions on how to do that are also given in the link above.

I do not recommend using the Windows XP firewall (which is turned on by default in XP SP2), as it does not protect your computer from acting as a source for nefarious actions, such as gathering information about you and sending it to criminals. Programs that "farm" such information may not always be picked up by anti-virus or malware detectors.

A one-way firewall, such as the one in XP, will not stop your PC from being used as one of many sources of a repeated nuisance attack on a webserver, or other Internet hosted service, in what is known as a "denial of service" attack. This might be totally silent to you, but causing a lot of trouble for someone else. These attacks can cause webservers and services to slow down and fail to respond to legitimate requests for data.

Some personal firewalls, such as ZoneAlarm for instance, specifically ask whether or not you want to give each new application (program) permanent or temporary access to the Internet. That can be a complicated question to answer and some research may be necessary.

I have also added a special note about printers, other network devices and assigning fixed IP addresses to these devices.

I've added some help for NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices using NDAS drivers with the LPX protocol (Ximeta).

New addition to the thread "Wireless Network Security".

What you don't say is what make/model of the router is, or if it ever worked correctly. This could be a hardware fault: the behaviour which you are describing sounds very similar to the problems which we had with our Linksys WAG54G. There is a known problem with the WAG54G when the unit overheats and you gradually lose the ethernet ports, but the wireless continues to work perfectly.

If it is a Linksys, then try changing the ethernet connection speed to 10Mbps - this isn't a proper solution but it will probably allow you to use the ethernet connection. Linksys routers do come with a 3 year warranty, but I would suggest that you try the retailer you bought it from rather than Linksys. Linksys just replaced our WAG54G with a WAG200G, but it took them more than 3 months to do this!

Judy, if there is a hardware failure (which I very much doubt, as this looks like a configuration issue), it could equally well be the NIC in the PC.

But I'm sure the OP simply needs to reconfigure the NIC's TCP/IP or firewall settings.

Let's wait until he/she reports back in.

The loopback is itself and should be trusted. 127.0.0.1 or localhost.

I'm sure all this guys problem is it has fixed IP address and dns settings on the NIC, when it just needs to be changed to DHCP enabled.

I too have a Linksys WAG200G, and both my ethernet wired desktop PC, and my wireless connected laptop work perfectly, but on both devices, I get page cannot be displayed when trying to access the router, 192.168.1.1.

I used the setup cd when origonally configuring the router, but there are additional features only accesible via the web that I'd like to access, like additional security.

Can ping the router, can ping bbc.co.uk, just can't get into the router config via the web.

OP - try another network cable if you haven't already, the simple possibilties are often overlooked.

(Just because the cable is recognised by Windows it doesn't guarantee that it's not faulty)
