Holyrood '07: Manifesto watch

Or at least the all promises / bribes that are being announced on the election trail.
They are coming thick and fast and I am losing track of them

So I thought a thread to gather them all together would be useful to help people decide on their vote. Okay so I am probably going for SNP, but I could be persuaded if the bribes are good enough...

Here's what I have noted so far...please add your contributions (especially as I haven't been paying attention to the Libs & Cons)

* * *

Scottish Labour:
* renationalise the railways in Scotland
* abolish water/sewage charges
* cut council tax for pensioners
*axe Tay bridge road tolls completely, & Forth Bridge road tolls for car-sharers
* more community wardens to tackle ASB

SNP:
* scrap council tax --> local income tax +3p
* axe all road tolls for all bridges
* encourage regeneration of deteriorating high streets, by abolishing business rates for small businesses

Well I've worked out I'll pay half what I do now for council tax under the SNP's proposals while my parents earning £50,000 between them will be no better or worse off.

The SNP are on winner here methinks. Tax should always be based on ability to pay.

As for excluding shares and savings. Too right. People should not be penalised for having the good sense to invest in their future financial security. Labour's obsession with nannying everyone is blinding them to the fact.

New labour- Old Labour- same state obsessed dogma.

Lib Dems:
* Abolish student endowment fees. (so university tuition would be completely fee-free for Scots then?

I rather like that, and also the proposed abolition of water/sewage rates promised by Labour if they win.

Match those please, SNP

They promised that in 1999 and then immediately junked it to power share with Labour.

The Sun ran a rather good guide to the Lib Dem manifesto on Thursday, it had a rundown of policies in their last manifesto that they abandoned after the election that are now in this one (to be abondoned again). They then highlighted policies they opposed in the last parliament taht they support in their manifesto.

In short a vote for the Lib Dems means nothing, you'd be aswell voting labour as its their manifesto you'll actually end up with.

It was the Lib Dems who brought it in! The SNP are pledging to remove all student debt.

Just to say (without wanting to get into a debate here...it's late lol)...that I am meeting Ming Campbell tomorrow! In recent weeks I've been doing a lot of work for them (last 2 days I've been out on the streets with the Parliamentary candidates)

Detailed descriptions on my YouTube channel in several of the vids - www.youtube.com/Jamandell

Well, pardon me, but the Sun ain't exactly a good source for reliable and unbiased information now is it?
The Lib Dems aren't as wishy-washy as people say. It is just the nature of coalition politics. The SNP itself has backtracked somewhat on it's referendum policy...I've been watching there language in recent days and it seems to be softening.

Such is the nature of coalition politics, c'est la vie. It's all about working together to get the best deal for the people as a whole (representative of their votes)

The SNP has back tracked on independance in recognition that it still needs to convince people of the arguments, however independance remains its primary aim.

The facts are it opposed the removal of road tolls in office then put their removal in its manifesto.

It promised fee free higher education, said that was an imovable policy, then dumped that before the last vote had even been counted in 1999 betraying thousands of students who believed them before the ink had even dried on their ballot papers.

They even opposed a local income tax even though its the core of their manifesto.

They ARE wishy washy, nothing in their manifesto has any value as they will abandon anything Labour wants rather than lose their ministerial perks.

Vote Lib Dem - Get Labour, they've as much said it themselves.

As far as I'm aware...they haven't dumped the local income tax plan.

And thanks to the Lib Dems we are not in huge amounts of debt like in England! We don't have to pay tuition fees at the time, only after when we are in a secure job. Thats a much better deal than before!

(I met Ming today...had a great time I can get a picture up if anyone wants.

The SNP were out too...but had MUCH less people. Thier candidate...Christine Grahame (*shivvers*) was meanwhile driving about in her blue, London-bought Mercedes convertable! Not exactly a way to relate to the public!

(But I am biased of course )

They havn't yet, but just you wait. As for the Tuition Fees it WAS a cop-out because its not what they promised students in 1999. Deny it all you want and go "la la la", but a spade is spade and betrayal is betrayal.

As for you comment on the SNP candidate -Lib Dem snobbery at its worst. Honestly in a straight fight between the Lib Dems and SSP or even BNP i'd choose one of the other two as at least they have principles however unpleasnt.

So she has a big blue Merc- Big Deal, I'd have one too if I had a spare £50,000.

Snobbery? Jeez...of all the things of being called I wouldn't have seen myself as being a snob!

That was just a harmless observation. We actually (including myself) walked up to the SNPers and were able to talk with each other fine! We all wished each other luck! (Except 1 man who looked uncomfortable)

I wish more than anything is that people with opposing political opinions can be civil.

Does anyone remember that late night poltical tv programme on STV about a decade or more ago, it was presented by Bernard Ponsonby, was sort of like a Scottish version of Question Time, discussing topical issues of the day, but very audience interactive, with the presenter going in among the crowd. Nicola Sturgeon was a regular on it (I think she was only an SNP student leader or young activist at the time), also Malcolm Bruce and Jim Wallace were regulars too.

I remember Nicola Sturgeon was already quite an impressive live debater then. I also liked the older generation of LibDem politicians like Ming Campbell, Malcolm Bruce, Charles Kennedy. Not too keen on the likes of Nicol Stephen or Tavish Scott.

He's very tall! I was shocked when I first met him last week.

(He asked me to take photos for him while he was with Ming and Jeremy )

I've made a YouTube vid about it showing all my pics and commentary etc, as well as some vids (you should see it in a few hours at www.youtube.com/jamandell )

But sorry for taking this off topic!

I don't think it is every day that forum members meet up with Party leaders, so I think it is allowed.

(besides it is still politics and still interesting)

She's an awful woman - stunningly egotistical and self-important with no known talent apart from bullying people into taking notice of her.

Just noticed today that the Conservatives say they will privatise Scotttish Water if they win.

I guess Annabel Goldie reckons she's on to a vote winner with that.
