Same. No equipment other than that hired from VM can legally be used to receive their services.

Even free-to-air services?
(Interesting question.) |

If you want 'free-to-air' channels, get a Freeview box.

no its not interesting as you need to find out what fta means. nothing is free. someone has to pay the transmisson costs. and nobody is paying for them to be sent often over the sky epg or cable system. thats why the channel 4 website makes it clear e4 is only free on freeview etc and is not on cable or "freesat" Last edited by orangeballoon : 15-04-2007 at 09:54. |

Looks dodgy to me!
According to the disclaimer on the Starview website "It is against the law to connect the Star View box to any equipment of which you do not own yourself". Therefore, as you're connecting to the Virgin network, I'd say it is not entirely legal.
Why would you want to pay for one anyway. It says that it receives 'FTA' channels, but if you don't pay Virgin for their service, surely they won't send the signal down your pipe anyway? Or it'll be scrambled... |

They can be patched very easy useing a null modem cable and will give you every cable channel free,
To make it clear here it is not illegal to buy one of these receivers (digivox or starview) or own one and its not illegal to patch it but it IS illegal to connect one to the vigin media network patched or not, But if you do this you are takeing money from virgin media and putting people out of jobs Quote:

So let me get this straight if you were to connect this box which breaks the virgin rules you could receive all of their channels including the likes of sky movies, sport, scifi channel, et al? Even if youv had not subscribed to them so long as virgin were still pumping the signal to you? If so what is to stop someone subscribing to the basic service and getting the rest of the channels for free? Not that I am advocating this in any way ;-(

Before this thread is close by Admin....
You are not allowed to connect non-VirginMedia devices to the cable network unless given permission (such as those with pass through connected TV's, etc). Most channels are encrypted though there are some (BBC ones, etc) which are broadcast in the clear, which you could recieve with the right equipment, but see above. Getting a Dbox, Starview, etc that enables you to watch encrypted channels are illegal as they're illegally descrambling an encrypted channel. It doesn't matter if you're a subscriber or not, you cannot connect a device that wasn't issued by VM (or ntl/tw/CWC, etc if you want to be pedantic) to the VM cable network, without their explicit permission. Don't see how some people can not understand this simple concept. OP, would have thought you'd realise from your previously closed thread that the Starview box you've bidded/bought on ebay shouldn't be used on the cable network....
