Is live music much better than recorded music?

Personally I would rather see an average band playing live than listen to my favourite band on CD or the radio.

Keep music live I say.

ps. I put this in here as I wanted a more general view.

Depends on what you are judging. Usually the playing and singing live is not near to the quality of the recorded music (ever heard back a live recording without it being edited first... yikes).

But you can't beat the atmosphere to being there. With your friends, up close and all that!

Also in the boring bits usually a few nice girls to eye up

For quality listening i prefer recorded but live music has that interaction and human feeling you can't get from recorded or even a broadcasted live performance. Horses for courses.

Depends on the band. Sometimes you go to see them live and still listen to the CD.

I thought they were banning live music anyway -or at least making it prohibitively expensive for pubs to feature duos and solo performers (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d.php?t=559103)?

there's a place for both really - love going to gigs, but also love some great records as well, that you wouldn't get live. some of Trevor Horn's brilliant work for example. frankie goes to holyywood probably weren't that great live, but the records were (and still are) amazing.

Years ago many pubs especially in town centres had live music. Even if the group wasn't that great it was still entertaining. You could sit and criticise the drummer or the singer or the bass player.
Nowadays it's one guy singing to backing tapes or minidiscs and usually it's very boring.
If you are playing live you can lengthen the song or go into another song or cut the song and do something else. You can also get people up out of the crowd and it's just a better environment.
I'd much rather listen to live music.

I am biased as I am a musician.

Depends who you're listening to really. I'd rather listen to a Pink Floyd cd than watch Westlife live, but the other night I saw the Australian Pink Floyd show live, and that is better than a Pink Floyd cd, believe it or not.

Live music everytime. Especially outdoors. There is nothing finer than sat with a beer in you hand, sun shining and listening to a band at a festival. Even when it's pouring down I love it!

OP what's your best live experience? and what was your most suprising live experience?

Depends who it is your watching.

On stage you could have somebody who does alot of dancing and stuff, and as a result is out of breath, makes the singing not very good at all - so in that situation, a playback (a playback of the song specifically recorded for touring) is better...you get the best of both

If its dance, trance, house etc or anything involving a good DJ then definately live music.

If its its band music then id prefer the cd, but then garbage like the arctic monkeys spout has never been my thang.

I agree with this wholeheartedly

But, nowt worse than going to see a band who are utter sh1te when live. Just coz its live certainly doesnt mean it will be good.

Is a DJ gig "live music"? Musicians had to be recorded to make the records s/he plays.

Yeh I guess it can be disapointing. Me and my mate were really excited about seeing DJ Shadow a few years back, but left half way though as it was well....not that good so I guess it has to be good. I remember seeing The Las many years back and they'd clearly been at the smack and got booed off! Saying that I saw Pink at a festival and bless she couldn't carry a note in a bucket but I still quite enjoyed it!

Didn't Elton John complain about Madonna doing live shows and she was miming ?
He said the public were being cheated.

I tell people that and they don't believe me, glad I'm not alone.
The Australian Pink Floyd have the best sound system I've ever heard live and I've seen hundreds of live bands.

Actually FGTH were pretty good live at the time of "Two Tribes", the music carried their less than perfect performances.
(Best band I ever saw live were the Undertones at a small gig - absolutely brilliant )

I don't think the two are really comparable, live music gives an atmosphere and experience that is completely different to listening to a recording, I'd rather see AC/DC in concert than listen to their albums, I'd rather see Paul Van Dyk doing a set in a club than listen to ones of his mix albums, but we can't always see them live so that's why there is a music industry.

In classical music, live recordings are often more exciting than studio recordings, by the same artist. It captures the atmosphere and inspiration of the moment. The concert is the moment, and the vitality of the moment cannot be reproduced in a studio

I saw Elvis in Las Vegas in 72 and 76 and it was a lot better than listening to his records. His voice sounded better live.

I cant argue with you. I've seen them three times now, and cant believe how good they are.

I bought their live cd (Animals and Wish You Were Here) the other night, absolutely brilliant.
