Whats the point of going to work.
Firstly iam 19 this year and have worked as a head cook in a cafe for the last three years and when ive wanted something such as learing to drive i,ve had to work my arse off to pay for it.
However my best mate told me last nite that he bumped in to his ex girlfriend who after they seperated went on to have a baby by another man. Since the baby was born she has only had access to it two days a week. However she has been provided with a flat to live in and gets everything paid for by us tax payers and now she is getting driving lessons for free paid for by us and will be provided with a car. Also her flat is a very nice place in the heart of the town centre yet the builders are coming in next week to decorate. Why the hell does she get all this for free when there are loads of us who have to work our arse of everyday to pay for things like she is having. Last edited by mintbro : 19-04-2007 at 17:35. |

I don't think I can imagine a world where I *didn't* work. I mean, what would you DO with yourself all day? I think I'd be bored out of my skull.
Basically, it gives me things to do. And I suppose I enjoy it. I wouldn't be living in this great city without doing the job I do! |

Sitting on your a*se all day sounds tempting, but in reality boredom would soon set in - you have to have something to occupy your brain, or you'd go mad.

If that is the case she deserves everything that the government can help her with. Edited to add: Did your friend say why she only had access to her child 2 days a week? You might also discover that the child has a serious illness which requires their parent be able to drive. Last edited by kittycate : 19-04-2007 at 17:46. |

Actually, you can probably forget the last one. |

People complain about benefit scroungers, but to be honest, even all the benefits you could possibly claim for wouldn't come to enough anyway! Maybe if I could claim £50k of benefits a year I might consider giving upwork, but otherwise, I think I'll stick at it!

What if I suddenly became disabled and had to foot the bill for all my medical expenses? What if I lived in a small house in... I dunno.... Birmingham, I was poor, and I had no financial support? How would I cope? |

There is no point in going to work for its own sake. Given the choice, nobody would do, even those who insist they want to feel productive. People do it to pay for food, to have a roof over the head and the occasional luxury.
Being productive, as some have already alluded to, is something different. But if you are being productive for the benefit of the organisation and taking home a cr*ppy wage, then you are a mug. On the other hand, if you enjoy your productivity and are paid a rewarding salary, or better still in a position to retain the full fruits of your labour then work is work worth doing. |

Sorry, but the driving lessons and car thing is an absolute load of panda poo. The Govt do not pay for driving lessons, or cars. The state do not pay fo decorators either. |

Maybe the girl in question has said that she wants to work on the ambulances or something else that requires a driving licence. |

When I was unemployed they were giving free driving lessons to people who had been unemployed for a certain amount of time, they also paid for suits for interviews and tattoo removal, and at least a couple of people were bought scooters so they could get to jobs, so it's not a load of panda poo, there were only a limited number of people who could get the driving lessons though, not everyone.

Or it could be that this person has a social fund loan from the government to pay for it I guess. Last edited by kittycate : 19-04-2007 at 18:05. |
