Page X of Y in a Word Document.

I've used a Page X of Y in the footer of a Microsoft Word document.

The first two pages are not made part of the word count to I set it to start at page 3 which works.

However I need to reduce the Y value by 2. It looks OK till you get to the last page then it looks like there are two pages missing.

Any ideas?

First (if you haven't already done it) you need to use a section break to split your document into two pieces. At the end of the second page, select Insert, Break from the menu. Select Next Page from the dialog box. You will be able to see the section break if you select the normal view.

Now go to your footer in the second section and select the number of pages field and delete it, keep the cursor when the number of pages field was and select Insert, Field from the menu.

Select the Numbering Category in the left column, now find SectionPages in the right column and highlight it. Click OK and you should now see a counter that shows the number of pages in the second section.

If this doesn't work, then I believe you can build a formular into a field, so you should be able to do something like {NumPages -2} but check the Help for the syntax.

If you change to the Normal view View, Normal then you can see the section breaks.

Putting your cursor on the section break and hitting the Del key will get rid of it, however make sure that you save your document first, as it may change things.

Think I've got it, I don't use the tool that shows line returns, tabs etc. Switched it on and I could then delete the sections

Hopefully thats done it. I'll add the Page X of Y later then.

I don't beleive it.

I've followed your post two on putting that section page numbers field in and when you get to the landscape pages it resets itself because of the difference in page layout it requires a new section.

Edit 1
Got it!

Delete the field that shows the total number of pages and add i tmanually, it won't change now.

I can't believe how complex it is.

Shame that there is not a management dialogue box to say use this header on every page and this footer for this section, then a different footer for this section and so on.

I mean lots of people must create documents with covers, then pages that have pages numbered i, ii, iii, iv, then 1, 2, 3 and so on.

Yeah, but that wouldn't be as powerful would it.
