Name tags on police uniform

What do you think?
Shortly, we will be made to wear name badges on our uniforms to make us "more accountable to he public".
So - does the general public care whether the police officer that turns up to either help them or nick them have a name tag which reads "Constable Smith" on their uniform, when their shoulder or collar numbers are displayed elsewhere?

i think when you are trying to help someone you will be more approachable to the public. People don't often catch your name and are reluctant to ask you to repeat it

I tend to agree with Chick. Where i live we are lucky enough to know most of the officers by name! But if we were in the city i think i would prefer to know the name of the officers rather than ask what their name is.

I have no problem when it is a victim of crime that you are dealing with as I quite often give my first name anyway, however it will quite often go the other way when you are dealing with offenders - especially in public order situations.

With an arsey drunk you just point to your shoulders and say - theres my number mate if you want to complain, however if you are parading aroung with Dave on your chest, how on earth are they supposed to know which Dave a person has an issue with?

Soon the back of every stab vest will bear the logo "Hows my Policing" phone 0845........

Depends what your name is. There was a Sergeant Darling where I used to live.

I wouldn't expect to call a police officer by his first name anyway but having "constable (surname)" or sergent (surname) would be appropriate
