The IPCC usually get involved where the police are suspected of being involved in causing a death.

Maybe there was an exchange of fire between an offender and a police officer, and the non-police fatality was shot by a police officer?

A report on BBC News 24 seems to be saying this is what happened. I think they also said the police officer was armed.

I feel for the police officer's family. What a tradgedy

What a terrible thing to happen. My thoughts are with the policeman's family.

We need a new forum set up next to Chatter; call it something like "BBC Headlines and Links: for people to post links to the BBC news site with no comment so people can queue up to say how horrified they are".

So, do you not have a sympathetic bone in your body then. Or are you above feeling?
To reply with the words you used implies (in my opinion) that you don't have an opinion or thought when something of this nature occurs?

In the challenging world in which we live, sometimes a small gesture such as expressing your sadness at a piece of news, can help us to deal with it.

I don't, really. I've spent the past year as a journalist in a place where kids are getting shot every other week. After a while, you start thinking "well, someone's been shot. How does this affect me?". If you let it affect you every time you've got to cover something like that, you'd go round the loop.

Fair point. We are as a nation I think becoming all to aware just how frequent these incidents happen. I would imagine people reporting on them grow a thicker skin, the same as a Dr or Nurse would when they see people injured as a result of such a happening.

I still find news of this nature disturbing though, it just confirms to me what a sad and sorry world we're living in now. Ok so not everyone's a gun/knife wielding nutter, but you hear so much more of these things happening and it saddens me.

Well why bother commenting on anything then.

This is a current news story, and it is a shocking one, which is why some wish to comment. It's not a matter of it affecting you personally.

When I'm not at work, I don't really bother reading the BBC news website or others. I come on things like Digital Spy for a bit of escapist chit-chat, or Manchester Confidential for idle gossip and bar reviews. Anything but "hard news".

I think the title of the thread sums up what the thread was about, and if you weren't interested you shouldn't have come in.

It won't matter, cause I'll be hiding in Durham. Or downstairs in the Circle Club. No one will get past Mo and into there. So nerny ner ner.

I read something in "Love It" () ages ago about men who pay to chuck cream cakes at women. You're probably their target market.

(Now JLP's edited his post, this just looks like me being a muppet. Grr.)
