cant wink at the queen, cant touch her.....whats all this rubbish

Why cant a President/Prime minster touch the queen or wink at her. Who makes these stupid rules up and why do they have to be obeyed. If I were a Nobel prize winner i would fart in her presence. I got where i am out of sheer brilliance. what is her bloody claim to fame other than being born into that family. In the 21st century why do we put up with this kind of nonsense.

Well, look on the bright side. It seems to distract you from all the REAL issues in the world.

How very dare you ! Take that back or I will throw you in the tower!

In fact I totally agree with you. The problem is that we have had this institution for so long that even though it is well past it's sell-by date, nobody can muster up the energy required to change things. Also people have the false notion that we have nobody better to put in her place as a president.

There was a bit of a hullabulloo years ago when an Australian Prime Minister put his arm around her if I recall but is it still a no-no?

Seeing the Queen greasing up to Bush was disappointing.

It really wouldn't be any different with a Head of State who wasn't the Queen. Physical contact of the sort we are talking about would almost certainly be inappropriate and winking - well it's maybe marginally more likely that you might do this but would you often wink at someone you don't know pretty well? Probably not.

You could do a Mark from Peep Show and claim its involuntary twitching

Would YOU want to be touched up by Dubya or hit on by him? If not, why should a marred woman in her 80s want to either? As for protocol, the Americans would probably shoot you dead if you tried to touch the President in case you were an assassin.

Her Majesty is not there to be touched or winked at by anybody. She is a royal personage, and therefore has dignity suitable to her bearing.

People are too familiar these days.

And who exactly told you that she cannot be winked at , I believe you will find it was the media who blew all this up. Buckingham Palace themselves say that when the Queen is visiting places it is the people at that end who get caught up in the protocol of it all , the Queen has hit that any of us are aware of complained about being winked at just as she has no desire for anyone to bow or curtsey to her if they do not wish to.

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/pressass/20...6323e80_1.html
The crowd laughed and the President paused, turned to the Queen and winked.

He turned back to the lectern and quipped: "She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child." The Queen laughed in response.

Does that sound like she was angry or someone had done something they should not, it was lighthearted.

There is on the other hand good old fashioned manners , and a wink may be ok depending on the circumstances , but it is not really the done thing to go around putting your arm round any person you do not really know and are not close to, I know my grandmother would not appreciate a person she hardly knew putting their arm round her.

I love the fact that people want to touch her, like some exhibit in a museum or something!

Maybe she should have one of those "Please Do Not Touch!" signs stapled to her forehead?

Actually, no.

The Queen actually generates a substantial income for the country. (see numerous other threads on this topic)

In a nutshell. Respect.

Something that is sadly lacking in this country today.

That you do not respect the institution, Respect that others might.

Its called respect actually.....something this country is lacking more and more often

Saying that when my son was 3, he got to present her with a bouquet. When she stopped to speak to him, he said "Allo Queen"
