Since Virgin Media started getting rid of transparent web proxies about a month or so ago have you noticed slower web surfing speeds particularly in the evening?

You could always try manually setting up your web browser to use a web proxy again.

Ideally you should find the address for a proxy that is local to your area and relevant to your former provider (NTLWorld or Blueyonder.)

To manually set up your browser to connect using a web proxy do the following;


In Internet Explorer go to Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN Settings

Tick the box under Proxy Server and enter the address of the proxy you wish to use.



In Firefox go to Tools --> Options --> Advanced --> Network --> Connection (settings button.)

Select Manual Proxy Configuration and enter the address of the proxy you wish to use in the HTTP Proxy field.



This is not a panacea for more fundamental problems with the network such as where UBRs are oversubscribed, but it should hopefully improve web surfing speeds for those who have noticed a drop in them in the last month or so.

Also be aware that some websites such as file serving sites will treat all connections from web proxies as though they are one person and therefore will limit your usage of their site when connecting through a web proxy.
