Rang abroad and the other party got charged ?!
I decided to ring a friend who's taken a holiday in Romania, and she told me that all the phone calls I make to her, she's getting charged for !
![]() How the hell does that work ? Isn't it me that's supposed to be forking out the bill, not her ? In fact, am I getting charged as well ? - she's on a pay as you go phone (don't know if it would make any difference if she was on a contract phone). Something not right here. |

Yep - it's a mobile.
But since she's in the EU (is Romania part of the EU ?), I thought we're all one big happy family and no charges are made ? I could understand it if she was outside the EU, but inside ? |

If you call a UK mobile while it's abroad, either from a land-line or mobile, then both parties have to pay. The good thing is that the EU have forced the mobile companies to reduce these charges from this August.

Yes, you get charged for answering your mobile abroad. You don't get charged for receiving text messages though (as you have no choice as to whether or not you receive them - you do have the choice not to answer a ringing phone though).

The reason that the phone in the Uk gets charged is because as far ant the telecom countries are concerned you are calling to a phone in a different country, so usually you would be charged for an international call, however you are calling a number with a UK prefix, so they would not be able to charge you an international rate (you may not be aware that the other party is abroad) so the other party picks up the short fall of the international charge.
Hope that makes sense. Darren |

What has the EU got to do with anything? She is still on a roaming agreement and you both pay.

The person making the call does not always know the mobile is not in the UK, so it is unfair to charge them for the international call. As the caller you pay your normal rate for ringing a mobile.
The network though has to get the money for the international part of the call, and as the person receiving the call has choosen to be abroad they get to pick up that extra cost. The good news as mentioned before that rules are coming in from August to limit these roaming call charges, but it is still not as cheap as a UK internal call |

The EU have just passed a law which says that network providers aren't allowed to charge more than 33p a min when calling within the EU (Ie, calling France from Britain.) I think the cost of receiving a call abroad has been restricted to 18p. Its been on the news. |

When i phone my brother's mobile (he lives in Canada) he gets charged for the call too. He says that in Canada when you call another mobile in Canada, the person receiving the call gets charged and the person dialling doesn't (or something like that, it was confusing!)
