Constant Yearning for the "Old Big Brother". O_o

I'm not some kind of wild, monstrous chav like everyone associates liking this sort of stuff with, but I like the style of Big Brother that BB5 brought, and exists to this day: All these odd, extreme characters and gameplaying and the like.

I LIKED BB6 (even though no-one was particularly likeable, it was fun to watch). I LIKED BB7 (until it got boring over halfway into the series).

They must be doing something right if they managed to get a whole forum - the same forum that is full of posts yearning for 'more normal housemates', when BB isn't on - rallying behind Nikki and Aisleyne.

Why are they freak shows? Because they have a unique personality? What's good about Big Brother is that it assembles all the unique, different personalities that we don't get the 'pleasure' of meeting every day. I mean, when Nikki did her first diary room thing, I was extremely surprised, as I've never ever met anyone in my life who is even remotely similar to Nikki.

I'd say the only housemate who it didn't really feel 'right' watching was Shabaz.

I don't watch Big Brother with the "it's a fly on the wall experiment" mentality, any more. I watch it in the same way I watch a drama show, except the people aren't acting (which makes it interesting).

I think the yearning for the 'old' BB is understandable. Nowdays, it really is just a circus...it seems to be rare when nominations and evictions are actually followed through in the normal way.. I believe this is one of the biggest forms of irritation for fans - that BB manipulates the show to their advantage.

For example (I'm just creating my own scenario), it's Week 1. Housemate A is facing Housemate B. The producers feel that Housemate A should remain in the house and they are gaining lots of supporters, are entertaining and are getting attention to the show.

But, however, this means Housemate A will be disliked by a lot of people. Therefore, the producers edit the show, to show Housemate A in the entertaining, nice light - while Housemate B is shown as the more negative, perhaps boring one.

And because a lot of DS:BB fans are avid watchers of the live feed, they see what really happens and it must be very frustrating to see how much the highlights show is edited.

Back in the days of BB1 and BB2 (what I consider the old BB), the show was innocent and not as manipulated.

With the later series, the show seems to rely on boring, predictable 'twists', 'crazy' housemates like Shabaz who are just mentally unfit for the house, and booing on eviction nights which just piss me off to no end, but that's another story.

I don't brand the housemates as freaks, and other nasty comments made about types of people that enter these shows. Hats off to them for having the courage to go on!

For that reason I don't see any problem with the housemates we've had in recent years. As with most we like some and dislike some. But some housemates have been given appreciation threads and the like on this forum, so I think really most people are happy with the wierd and wonderful selection we have every year! Besides they're never as bad as everyone moans they are

The constant manipulation of the show by BB is more of a problem than the choice of housemates.

Agree completely.

The voting manipulation makes me the most mad. *omg Pete is up...we better make it a vote to save this week, ensuring he stays in*

I wouldn't see Nikki or Ash as that unusual. Brian and Nadia set the scene for Nikki. Ash wasn't that odd - elements of her had appeared before and whether you see her as unusually weak or strong depends on how you see her.

My question would be do people want to see what would happen to people if BB just threw out some challenges and relied on a varied cast to interact or prefer BB to provide them with artificial dramas to get reactions? Do you want Emma on Fight Night or to get to know Emma and watch her interact with Victor? If you like the idea of setting up dramas do you think BB should go as far as to use people and get them out to meet BB's need for big evictions rather than let them develop? Do you want to see if Nikki can change if the house develops in the less hostile way it would without the GT winner twist, or do want her to become miserable, go and come back? Same with Ash - do you want to see Ash coping, or not, with a series of minor problems or do you want her to have the bigger role they signposted for her but then aborted - as leader of the opposition?

As it is, I don't think BB gives anyone the opportunity to shine and by BB7 most of the HM are just there to pad the weeks till Pete wins. The people who might have challenged end up with no stories or no support base or are back by a twist or evicted by a twist. In old BB what you do and who nominates you matters and its perfectly possible to see alternative people winning if they had done as well as the winners did with similar challenges or the winners had done less well.

On the whole I'd rather just watch people interact and relationships develop..........with the natural twists and turns that happen in human relationships.

And if that gets a little 'dull' for a while.........well, that's life.

The trouble now is that everything is shallow and pretty ephemeral............x has a blazing row with y..........so what, there'll be another BB gimmick tomorrow that'll make x and y best friends and x will row with z for a day..........

It's all fireworks and no bonfire............

Or in the case of BB7 one big banger a month and lots of damp squibs in between.

It's all about 10 second sound bites to hold the attention of the masses. I'd much prefer "reality" Whatever that may be.

What we want is smouldering embers bursting into flame when they reach the natural combustion temperature............not when BB blows on them.

I love a good metaphor, me..............

BB1, and possibly BB2 were 'reality' when the contestants were not even sure if any significant numbers were watching the program.

Now, I think its a circus and contestants merely see BB as a vehicle to their 15mins of fame afterwards...

Doesn't stop me watching it tho...

Am I the only one that gets the impression that if things went back to 'the old days' everyone would whinge about (a) it not being original enough; or (b) it being boring and like BB4.

What I'd prefer it to see is it to go to the 'new days'. A BB4 - BB5 jump again. Although I don't know how the could do that.
