new modem just arrived, virgin media model 255

My new modem arrived this morning, after 11 days after ordering, it is a virgin media 255 model, it is a lot smaller than my old ntl 100modem ,the new one came with a mains cable adaptor, and a little spanner for connecting the co-aux cable ,but no cable of any kind with it,so i guess you just connect your old cable to it, i have not connected it yet ,but it seems easy ,after connecting you have to call a number to give them your mac address to get on line all in all quite a quick delivery/sevice

Did you read the poor buggers plight here the other day ?, he was regging a new modem but the service was down and it took man hours and calls back and forth to get him online and he could not even use his old modem as it was unregged.

I would advise you call the number after you remove your old modem and wire up new one apart from the mains power, if they say the services are all running and there will be no issues, then unreg old one and reg new one, dont want to be without WWW at the weekend.

got my new modem this morning, once you have the cables in and switched on just ring the number and give them the mac address which is printed on the back of the modem and they`ll activate it.

took less than 5 mins all in all to get back online.

Lucky for you, but the service to do that was down the day the other person tried to swap over a modem.

BTW let us know how your new modem performs over the old one on 20meg

I got one of these modems this morning to replace my old TJ210 (which, incidentally, is too large for the returns packaging!!). I was about to call the number when my internet suddenly started working.

Strange, because I thought VM had to register the new MAC address -- or does it happen automatically?

seen that unfortunate one, however that doesnt mean to say every single person will experience that, and the whole thing with new modems performing at 20 meg, are the old ones not replaced because they cant handle the 20 meg, while the new ones can, so surely no room there for comparison

I had the same issue with my SB4100, far too big to send back and Virgin said I can keep it since they won’t want it anyway since it's ancient. So I have a large paper weight

I had to call the number to register my modem so maybe you just lucky? I would log into the modem at http://192.168.100.1 and see if it has the right tier of service to be sure.

I had a look and the modem settings seem okay (10240000 down, 512000 up). But I called anyway and went through the script.

Amusingly, the number on the sheet of paper I got was wrong -- it said to call 0845 545 1111, but looks like it should have been 0845 454 1111... Called 151 in the end anyway, seeing as it's free.

It's obviously connecting to the network, but I'm getting no more than about 1 Mbps down at the moment. I'll check again tomorrow, but if it's no better some ranting might be required...

Since you never did reg it, try your old modem again, unless you finally did reg new one.
jemo, I wont be unregging mines till the person on the other end lets me know all is working, if they say there is some issues with the service I will do it another time, once new SB5101E modem is here I will reg it and return my old SB4100 and that SA2100 they sent me last week.

Do you have any pictures of the new model? Or is there a website that already provides them?

Thanks.

You will need new modems for 50Mbit anyway it uses a different standard to achieve that performance.

These new modems are rather expensive compared to the current ones.

And I would be willing to bet that the 50meg service will be an additional (premium) product over and above the existing XL package. I doubt that there will be any automatic (free) upgrades. BBRealist's comment about the modem cost also supports that argument.

Looks nothing like that, the SA2100 is here: http://www.scientificatlanta.com/cus...ce/7007012.pdf

LOL, USB1.1 if anyone uses it wont get 10meg fully (although should) nevermind 20meg
