Help required with friend's web page access woes
Hi all, could I request your assistance a sec please?
My mate is having problems accessing web pages; she's connected to the Internet and is talking to me through WLM, but she can't access any website except one, which is the T-Mobile website. She keeps getting DNS errors when she tries, with both Firefox and IE. She's tried everything: flushing the DNS cache, a Winsock reset, System Restore, (several times) checking her firewall (ZoneAlarm) settings; everything we can think of, she's tried. She can ping the BBC site and has done a tracert, which can be found here. This came about when she tried again to get her wi-fi working. (It can connect, but the signal keeps dropping) The same happened again when she tried the wi-fi so she went back to a wired connection and that is when the trouble started. She's now connected to the Internet using RJ11 cable, so for now, the wi-fi isn't an issue. Also, her ADSL modem is now showing as being an "ADSL WAN USB adaptor" which it isn't at all; it used to show the name of her modem. I've tried Googling all I can but I've not found anything of use. She's tried reinstalling all the relevant software, including running CCleaner on the Registry after uninstalling, yet the problem is still there. We've also checked the Hosts file to make sure nothing untowards has gone on in there, but that appears to be fine. This is the error she gets upon trying to access web pages: "Unable to connect Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.co.uk. * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments. * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection. * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web." And here is her HJT log... Thanks in advance and apologies for the length of this post!

Phew that's a lot, maybe time Donna cleaned the PC out a bit or prune it a bit!
I'll be honest as I can't be arsed to check it all out, I simply copied and pasted that lot into www.hijackthis.de and it gives some answers, I know it's not 100% accurate but it gives some clues. this bit looked a bit dogy: R1 HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,AutoConfigURL = file://C:\Program Files\Secret Surfer\ws.js Did you scan using AVG antispyware, MS Defender and Spybot SD? I wrote a guide on things to try here http://www.orbitalzone.com/virus.htm Looks like you've got AVG antivirus and Norton antivirus and McAfee of some description? (edit, that's an online scanner for Symantec I see now) I think if nothing comes up in virus or spyware scans then maybe uninstall Zonealarm and use windows firewall and see it that helps pin point the problem, also I'd be inclined to remove all those many activex files (online scanners etc) that aren't needed most of the time. |

Cheers for the reply, Orbitalzone!
![]() I know- there's a lot there and a few bits and pieces I can see that she can safely remove, but I wanted an expert opinion before prompting her to remove anything. She uninstalled Norton YEARS ago, but that Registry entry is still there (typical, eh?! ) and the McAfee entry is just SiteAdvisor, so that's no problem really. I'm picking through her HJT log now using Google to see if it sheds any light on things.I know she's scanned with AVG Anti-spyware and AVG AV- and she's scanned with Defender too I believe but I'm not sure about anything else. She's gone for a lie down now though as she's got a migraine but I'll ask and find out exactly what she's scanned with. Thanks again for your help, OZ. I'm quite good with computers really, and so is she, but we've tried absolutely everything we can think of, to no avail. Oh- yes, she's going to have a mega clear-out when this is sorted- there's a lot on her PC which can be got rid of, I believe. I'll give her a list of ActiveX entries she can delete- all the online scans and stuff can go; I'm just looking into what she can delete now. I'll have to vanish for tea though in a sec as I'm starving!
