thank god i've left virgin bb for sky bb

well it's done!!

i'm syncing at 15Mb down and 768Kb up. i'm also uncapped and running from adsl2+ and fastpath as confirmed by tier 3 support yesterday. i have download speeds just short of 16Mb when testing with speedtest.net (i know it's not the best testing utility)

£10p/m for this is certainly better than the £14.99-£17.99 virgin were charging for 2Mb!!! - OK it's now £10 but it's still only 2Mb!!

come on virgin... pull your finger out.

in the 3 days i have had it, no problems at all. although they provide a free 108Mbps Netgear router, i'm using my Airport Extreme and Express to connect.

it's not dropped on me at all. all i will say is do your homework and read www.skyuser.co.uk and their forums. - not to take anything away from DS but there are more people there with sky knowledge to help.

just make sure your exchange is unbundled for sky and if you want the sky max package you must have sky tv... if not you can still get sky mid.

if you are a long way from the exchange sky may cap your bb at 8Mb to prevent errors and disconnections. this wasn't the case for me as i'm near the exchange and have uncapped adsl2+ and fastpath enabled.

Can we see the results from speedtest.net? Perhaps 1 at 9am, 1 at 5pm and 1 at midnight. Any other ADSL`ers upto the challenge. Might consider it if i can see some results.

i'll do my best but i might not use speedtest.net... i'll use speedtest.bbmax instead. it has faster loading times and speedtest.net is flash heavy.

The big problem with Sky broadband, they quote 7 days for installation, then fob you off with excuses for the next 2 months until either a. it finally starts working, or b. you give up and sign up with someone else.

i was fortunate that the migration of my phone line and number from virgin to bt went smooth.

secondly i didn't already have adsl broadband, so it was a new install without mac codes.

it took about 7 days to bring my phone back to bt. and about 12 days for broadband to go live on it.

...but now i'm flying!

bite me!

i was posting in here prior to moving, and i know all the people who were nice enough to reply on this subject without making snide comments would be interested to see how the move went.

if you also read this thread you'd know there are people who are thinking of doing the same.

are you a cable fanboy?? - or perhaps an employee !!

"where's your sky one gone? - where's your sky one gone?"

thanks for the post, im interested as you were a previous Virgin subscriber and I too am thinking of Sky or BE (ADSL2 just been installed in my exchange).

Any idea of caps or torrent throttling yet? (as in throttled before your even close to your limit like i get with Virgin after only a few minutes of a torrent)

Same here - thanks for the post (don't know why some people are slagging you off for posting on this forum as you were giving your findings on both services).

I was debating moving to Sky + BT just over 6 months ago (as I had Sky anyway), but NTL did me a deal of £10 for the 10meg service for 6 months. Now they have stopped doing it and the best they can offer me is half price (£12.50/month) for the 4meg service for 3 months!

I'm going to give them a ring tomorrow to see if they can better the deal as I'm happy with them apart from that (although it can slow down some evenings). I think if they do me the 4meg service for £10/month for good I may stay with them (if not I'm off)!

Also could you tell me where you live and how far you are away from the exchange (I'm around 1 mile from the exchange as was intrested in the likely speed that distance away).

Cheers, Mark.

I am always worried by peple leaving saying what a good service there new service is and then saying , in this case VM, pull your figer out and get sorted.

Why do you want a product you don't have and probably had the hassle of changing and in some cases costs and then harper for the old service only better

I would just say "jobs a good one and I'm sorted" the previous supplier improvement is not worth a jot to me

make the most of it m8.. I have both Sky and Cable connections in my house and I have had nothing but problems with sky.

Getting through to support especially tier 3 (there are 3 levels) is impossible or if you do get through it's only after convincing an indian call centre that you have already rebooted the modem 100 times lol oh and if they say they will call u back then forget it Did I mention u pay for the call

Basically for £10 you get a good connection thats good when it's good but absalute crap all other times.

Speed is dependant on how close you are to the exchange and afaik they don't support fastpath so your lucky they did it for you, maybe things have changed since i was last over at skyuser forum. oh and I'm capped at 8meg. unoffically the download limit I hear is around 250gig but I'm not sure if they inforce it.

well i got straight through to tier 3 at the first time of calling.. i was also given a direct number for future reference!!

i live 1.1k from the exchange but the length of my line is about 1.6k. i'd have trouble downloading even 50GB per month... and as sky have launched sky anytime on your computer... they actively encourage you to download movies, tv shows and sporting highlights from them to watch.

at least now i'm not being capped for 4hours if i download a certain amount per evening!!

using a utility one of the skyusers on the forum came up with it downloads the detailed stats of your router and tells you if your using G.DMT or ADSL2+ and fastpath, error stats etc !!

I assume you must of had some problems then if you needed to speak to Tier 3?

I mean they only take calls regarding connection problems which can't be fixed by either Tier 1 or Teir 2 support.

I only pay £10/pm for my Virgin Broadband.... but don't have a phone line, so Sky can not be comparable for me (as you need phone line aswell)...... never had any issues with either.

You have to remember that not everyone is a speed/download freak.

as i've read in many places, there aren't many people living close enough to telephone exchanges to get the max out of their ADSL2+. for this reason some isps cap their broadband @ 8Mb to prevent errors.

one phone call and 10mins later and i was uncapped and running at ADSL2+.

i am 1.1km from the exchange as the crow flies. but given my attenuation stats and noise on the line etc... my total line length is about 1.6km

if you look at the various packages sky offer... the max package is unlimited. the mid package has a 40GB cap. max is £10, mid is £5. to get max you need to have sky tv.

there is not torrent throttling that i know of, i got a couple last night. if your worried use a downloading client that is able to mask your downloads... azureus i think does this.
