Axe falls on Sky Travel (+1), Sky Travel Extra, Sky Travel Shop and Sky Three?!

Sky Travel, Sky Travel Extra, Sky Travel Shop and Sky Three are all to be axed and possibly merged into one new channel.

More info --> http://media247.co.uk/skydigital/new...travel_set.php

Good riddance I say! I never forgiven Sky for saving Sky Travel instead of [ .tv ] when it was literally a toss up of which one to axe and which one to expand! Maybe now they'll bring back [ .tv ] as they've brought back Sky Premiere and Sky Arts...

Neither the SDO article, or the Broadcastnow article from which it is taken mentions Sky 3 at all.

If true, sounds like more cost cutting to me

Wasn't the Movies changes bad enough?

There was never any correlation between Sky Travel and [.tv]. Have to agree it was a great shame when [.tv] was pulled. It expanded on digital from 6-8pm to 12noon to midnight back in 1998. Sky Travel remained 11am to 4pm on digital till at least 2000 before transmission hours were expanded.

Sky Travel went downhill about 2 years ago when they seemed to drop all travel related programming and stick on programmes about vets, zoos, theme parks and airlines. In the early days it had some great documentaries about skiing, golf, holidays and travel. I used to love a programme called Globetrotter which visited 2 or 3 locations in every episode. Most programmes were American, apart from Anna Walkers programmes and Around the World in 30 minutes with Sky Travel, which were rehashes of the BBC's holiday programme and Wish You Were Here! There was a truly cringeworthy travel program for kids that was shown in the holidays called Boomerang. It was filmed in Australia in the 1970's. It really was such fun to watch for entertainment value. Sam Chisolm must have brought it over with him!

To get rid of Sky 3 would mean Sky assuming Ofcom have approved their changes on Freeview, as otherwise Sky would still need Ofcoms permission to change Sky 3 on Freeview, as they did when it changed from Sky Travel to Sky 3.

I like watching Club reps on Sky Travel but not much else.

Find Discovery Travel and Leisure better, but even that has too many A place in the sun repeats.

I can't see anything in that article that says "Sky Travel, Sky Travel Extra, Sky Travel Shop and Sky Three are all to be axed".

I didn't fail to see the question mark in your title. But I saw no question mark in your statement in the post "Sky Travel, Sky Travel Extra, Sky Travel Shop and Sky Three are all to be axed and possibly merged into one new channel."

Perhaps in future you should make it clear that you are making a wild guess rather than wording it as a fact.

Funny, the only thing I see between the lines is blank
But still SKY are looking to removing SKY Thrcc from Freeview so if they "merge" all these channels into one it will also free up space on the Satellite Txp's for something else (Can't think what though)
But it could give them/us a stronger SKY Thrcc anyhoo!

I agree with you. Theres nothing about an axe of all 3 channels.

"Sky Travel is to relaunch giving it a new name and a retail element according to Broadcast magazine.
Full details have not yet been announced but speaking at a conference, Sky managing director of entertainment Sophie Turner Laing said it seems that the channel would be given a "whole new makeover" that would make it more entertainment oriented."

Only refers to Sky Travel and its a ''makeover'' not axe!

I daresay the +1 channel will remain but the Sky Travel Extra channel will close. All will be revealed!

Its was all revealed earlier - do try and keep up:

Sky Travel --> Sky Real Lives
Sky Travel +1 --> Sky Real Lives +1
Sky Travel Extra --> Sky Real Lives 2
Sky Travel Shop --> Sky Travel

I have read so many topics and threads about this spouting off different info...I have given up. I don't watch Sky Travel anyway, so the changes make no difference to me whatsoever.

If you have a look at recent schedules you'll see it's been going this way for some time. The "Travel" name was starting to get less and less appropriate.

So now Sky Travel will be Sky Real Lives and Sky Travel Shop will be called Sky Travel. Sky Three remains as it currently is.
