Satellite John’s little tip to Virgin Media for them to make a little bit of money

On the adult section of On Demand there is adult stuff, but it is all softcore (has to be because you can only show 18 rated stuff on TV, R18 can only be sold through licensed sex shops). So it leads to lots of disappointed punters, who won’t be coming back or just won’t buy.

What Virgin Media should do is offer a selection of art house films (rated 18, so legal to show), which also have real hardcore sex in them. They should have an art house section in the adult section of On Demand, and make clear the benefits.

Examples include: Catherine Breillat's Romance, Patrice Chéreau's Intimacy, Virginie Despentes's Baise Moi, Destricted (various directors), and Michael Winterbottom's 9 Songs which all feature unsimulated sex and have been passed uncut for 18 classification.

I really hate censorship.

SJ.

Just to confirm that I don't actually have Virgin TV. I am a Virgin Broadband customer only.

Not a bad idea for those desperate people wanting to see a little bit of the "hot stuff" I can't see Vm offering that though they would go down in a lot of peoples estimations if they were to offer that

I really don't think too many people would be bothered at all. Anyone who doesn't want to watch it won't, anyone who does, will. The only people pissed off would be the religious, but they're pissed off about seeing a nipple through a cardigan.

To those who don't know, all of these films have "18" certificates and are freely available to buy on DVD. So Virgin would hardly be "going down in people's estimations" by showing such perfectly legal broadcasts.
I think Film4 is more likely to show those films, to be honest. In fact, they already have shown some of them. "Intimacy" was shown on Sky Movies! Doubt we'd see "baise Mois" shown on any channel!

Is 'Baise Mois' also known as 'Irreversible'? If it's the one i'm thinking of, i'm surprised it's even on PPV on VM, it wasn't even a good film, the rape scene was the only thing people talked about.

No, that's a completely different film. Just like the others, though, it would be completely legal to show it. It was actually passed uncut because, while the rape scene is indeed harrowing, it does not seek to titilate. "Baise Mois" also contains a rape scene, but the violence in other parts of the film (as well as the graphic real sex)is what makes it so controversial.

Yes, and like it or not, that seemed to stick in a few people's throats.

That's incredibly ignorant, "Deep throat" is just a porno showing consensual sex, there are no scenes of rape and torture! Why is your link pretending that it does? The version of "Deep Throat" shown on Telewest was heavily censored anyway!
Mary Whitehouse lives on!

Wouldn't it be great to have a VIRGIN porn channel, a sex channel made by Virgin, not one showing young ladies loosing their virginity

a) it's losing not loosing huwb
b) i'm sure their broadband isn't constrained in the same way as the tv service is? perhaps they could stream it via their broadband service e.g. for XL customers on the 20meg like they will do with Big brother. It wouldn't cost them anything since the data would already be cached on their network i.e. no bandwidth costs for them.

I swear it is because of my idea that private equity got in on the act. This is how they are going to make it work. I should get paid for this.
