I may have to give a statement to the police!

Tonight, I heard a noise outside which sounded like someone falling or dropping a bike. I have a bay window (I'm on the 2nd floor in a flat) and the middle blind is down so I couldn't see out directly to the front. I looked out one side window, and couldn't see anything apart from a boy walking a dog and drinking a bottle of coke. I looked out the other side and saw a bike half on the kerb and half on the road, but no other people.

Then, a silver car pulls up and a man and woman get out and take the bike off the road. At first I thought they were just being good and moving the bike of the road then looking to see who it belonged to. They spoke to the boy with the dog, and when I looked down towards the front door there was a boy hiding in the garden!

He was watching the two people with the other boy, but they couldn't see him. I went downstairs and asked the boy what he was doing. He was a bit vague and then said he'd fallen off his bike. He got up and I took him over towards the two people who turned out to be plain clothes police! The bike may have been stolen! So the police took my name, address and phone number and said they might be round to take a statement!

It's too much excitement for a Tuesday.

Yeah, thought that once I'd typed it! However, it'll help me remember the excitement of tonight...I will refer back to this post in the years to come and think, 'ah, remember that excitement'.

Its probably a good idea that you have written down what happened as it will sort of imprint it on your mind (I wish all people did that )
It may be a good idea to jot down as much of a description as you can remember somewhere as they will definately want that.
you know - ethnicity, gender, age, height, build, hair colour, complexion, clothing etc etc

That's kind of what I thought about writing it down. It will help me remember!

They put the boy who'd been hiding in the garden in the car, and they seemed to know the other boy. To be honest, I'm a rubbish witness - don't really remember anything about them apart from the dog and they both had on tracksuits! I did notice that the one in the garden was all dirty from lying in the mud. The smallest one had sort of sandy hair.

Ask to give a five-point statement, particularly if the officer looks like (s)he has a few years in.

I gave a statement to the police several years ago, as part of a murder investigation in Glasgow.

Basically they ask you lots of questions, and one of the police officers writes down what you tell them, and then at the end of it they show you the statement and ask you to read it through, and if you are happy with it you sign it off.

They also asked to take a cheek swab from me to check against the suspect DNA, just to rule me out as a matter of routine. I said no problem, as I know it's not me. They said my sample will be destroyed if it is negative, otherwise, I'll have armed police outside my door in the morning!

They did ask if I was the boy's sister or mum at first...how old must I look? But it was pretty obvious I had nothing to do with it - my baffled expression when they said they were the police said it all. I don't think I'd really thought about Aberdeen having plain clothes policemen!

Ah, DeltaUnit - 5 point statement, eh? I'll try that if they come round!

Are you sure they were police? Did they show their warrant cards?

They had all the radios and notebooks and stuff too - but they didn't actually show me a warrant card - and I didn't ask to see one, which I should have done. But the big police van (it was one of the riot ones too!) was a big clue!

The only place in law where it is set that a Police officer must show their warrant card is under S1 PACE or S23 MDA which is if you are detained for the purposes of a search

The sample was destroyed but the DNA record will probably be kept on file so if you step out of line anytime in your lifetime they can look you up and put you away. They probably won't even bother with a trial.

What if they are plain clothed and wanting to talk to young boys? I'd ask.

OK, if you rufuse to show your warrant card or otherwise prove you are police, would I get arrested for obstruction for not letting you talk to the young boys?
