A Star Is Yawn

THERE are times you'll be watching someone in a movie and you can't help but wonder ``how can this person still be considered a star?'' Here are 10 big names which should be smaller than they currently are:

Agree? Disagree? Who's Missing? Remember these are celebrities considered STARS not TABLOID DARLINGS.

ROBERT DE NIRO: Used to be one of the greats. Now one of the grating. Sole shot of salvation is a reunion with director Martin Scorsese.

HILARY SWANK: The most mercurial box-office draw of the modern age. When she's good, she wins an Oscar. When she's not, she's lucky to be getting paid.

JIM CARREY: Has spent most of the decade proving he can be a serious actor. The fanbase he built on crowd-pleasing comedies couldn't care less. Will they still be there when he finally lightens up?

JULIA ROBERTS: Hasn't reported for live-action film duty in almost four years.

HARRISON FORD: Would have retired yonks ago if not for the faint sniff of another Indiana Jones movie. Now that it's really going to happen, it's time this old Ford finally revved up.

DREW BARRYMORE: A good performance for her is when you fail to notice she can barely act at all. Her past few films have really found her out.

ORLANDO BLOOM: The ultimate pretty-boy passenger in a variety of big-budget vehicles. Tried only the once as a solo leading man (2005's Elizabethtown) and tanked abysmally.

NICOLE KIDMAN: No sense of quality control. Audiences have never fully warmed to her. And yet, she's still the busiest actor in world cinema today.

EWAN McGREGOR: This one-time Mr Consistency seems to have gone completely off the boil since he grew a beard for Star Wars.

ANGELINA JOLIE: If Paris Hilton wasn't around, she'd be the one everybody would identify as being famous for being famous.

At first I was going to bold the ones I agree with, but as I was going through the list I realised I agree with all of them except Robert De Niro. I used to be part of Team Jolie, but now she gets on my freaking nerves. She is more famous for being freaky than acting.

ROBERT DE NIRO: The roles aren't there out for him so he's just bringing in the cheques now. But he's running the Tribeca film festival and if the right role came up would still kick ass. He's like Meryl Streep - give him something to get his teeth into and he'll deliver.

HILARY SWANK: She'll never win another award again. She has no movie star appeal and frankly she'll never get another decent role again.

JIM CARREY: Comic actors come and go. I like him but his time is over. When the new guy comes in he'll be over completely and turn into Robin Williams - ewww!

JULIA ROBERTS: True but still the biggest female movie star in the world even without a movie to her name. That probably says more about the other women than it does about her.

HARRISON FORD: He's too old and uninterested to do anything anymore including Indiana Jones.

DREW BARRYMORE: She's building a producer role behind the scenes. She'll be around for a while yet doing the same old, same old.

ORLANDO BLOOM: not a leading man. Not an actor. Nice, pretty boy but his lucky run is over I reckon.

NICOLE KIDMAN: I agree completely.

EWAN McGREGOR: Again, had a lucky run. has nothing to offer anymore. Goodbye.

ANGELINA JOLIE: Disagree. She still has one leading actress oscar in her yet plus one for her humanitarian work in later years.
Her latest A Mighty heart is getting great reviews for her performance and she's starring in a Clint Eastwood film next - that's some pretty grande fromage for a couple of years! She needs to cut down on the tabloid coverage though.

Agree with a lot of those. Most of them are just riding on their past reputations.

De Niro is a legend - one of the all-time greats. Hell, even if he accepted a role in Hollyoaks I could forgive him

Julia Roberts is way over-rated and has always been mediocre IMHO.

The rest I can take or leave. I do like Jim Carrey though - he should do more serious roles - he was great in 'Man on the Moon'.

Orlando Bloom has never been a proper actor IMHO.

I think the problem is the word star has been distorted by the media to apply to idiots like Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie etc.

Forty years after stars like Robert Mitchum, Katherine Hepburn, Carey Grant made their best movies they were still stars. So De Niro will always be there, along with Julia Roberts and Harrison Ford.

And as for Orlando, he is nothing without his elf gear.

Eddie Murphey could be added to that list.

I think some get so far up themselves, nobody wants to work with them.
Or, it was a brilliant film[s] that carried them so far.

Are you kidding?
He's put in 3 award nominated performances in his last 3 films, is one of the few actors who can steer any film to £100 million at the box office and is doing some of the best work around right now.
The Aviator, The Departed and Blood Diamond all came out fairly recently and before that there was Gangs of New York and Catch me if you can

The Departed hasn't been out long. He is probably making more decent films.

All those mentioned above were great!

The Departed only came out last year and won the Oscar for best film at this February's awards.

He is currently filming Revolutionary Road with kate Winslett directed by Sam Mendes.

In the autumn he films Ridley Scott's new movie and then it's the big one 'The Rise of Theodre Roosevelt' with Scorsese.

De Caprio is rubbish, I can't believe he gets work.

DeNiro, after watching HEAT again the other night, as the above said give him a good role.. Jackie Brown springs to mind.

Hillary Swank, why she got another Oscar for Million Dollar Baby? Maybe the Academy only watched the trailer.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was amazing - I always think Carrey could be a modern James Stewart type actor. He can still make you laugh - the robot scene in Fun with Dick and Jane had me grinning.

I can't believe they missed out Catherine Zeta Jones!

I just saw her on the cover of a mag and couldn't remember a single film she has been in.

come to my mind :
Sean Connery - he was and still the perfect James Bond.
also -
Anthony Hopkins - isn't his role as Hannibal really scary? I remember when I saw Silence of the Lambs, I thought ..wow.. he's great in thriller.

Re. Catherine Zeta Jones - She was Fantastic IMO in Chicago, but I can only recall her in the Zorro films and nowt else?

Never 'got' Hilary Swank. Did she beat Kate Winslet to the Oscar whens he won for Million Dollar Baby? Travesty if you ask me.

I really do hope Kate gets one, she mightily deserves one

Excactly, she is supposed to be this A-list wonderful, respected actress, part of hollywood royality, but you really have to stop and think about what she (and the others on the list) are famous for.

I can honestly say I've never seen a film with Hilary Swank in it. I guess I have bad taste in films.

I had to consult IMDB.

Yes, she was in it, I remember seeing it and thinking of how shit it was.

I think Tom Hanks should also be on the list. When I hear his name, I think Forrest Gump and not much else.
