I have just bought a sky dish on a tripod what next?

I can get a sky box from my girlfriends house, that is not a problem but is there anyone selling a freesat card?

what cables do I need (apart from the flat cable to fit through the window)

How do I set it up

any help would be much appreciated

Sky are just dying to sell you a card, set up for non-subscription, for £20

CT100 coax cable? As good as any.
I personally wouldn't use a 'flat cable'. The usual method is to drill a hole through a wall or a window frame.

'F' connectors.
Self amalgamating tape to keep the rain out of the cable.

A south facing aspect. Look at where everyone else has their dishes.

Now I understand

I'm not sure you can use a 'flat cable'. The signal won't like it one bit
Perhaps someone else has experience of using one.

Very interesting, never seen that before. They say " No measurable loss of signal or quality."
That must surely be in the "unloaded" state though, for I guess that a window closing with pressure on the cable must have some effect?

They are available on eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FLAT-COAXIAL-C...QQcmdZViewItem

If you check this seller's feedback, several have been bought and the purchasers all seem happy.

Aligning the dish is often problematical too - but Dave Sullivan's guide will crack that problem for you.

Flat cable etc.

I love the comment about your landlord, Silent85, and what you would do "when she comes up - I would just hide it".
And what about the satellite equipment?!!!

To be fair, the landlord is hardly gonna go looking through his tv cabinet.

TV - Ok
VCR - Ok
DVD Player - Ok
PS2 - Ok
Satellite Reveiver - Get out by the end of the week!

As long as you don't break the rules there isn't much they can do to you. Just put the dish in the garden and move it iof the landlord does come round.

I'm sure that Sam was being genuine.
Flat cables exist as I said, but I wasn't sure they were a good idea at microwave frequencies.
However, several people seem to have given them the 'OK'.

In any event try not to kink the cable too much.

Did you call the Sky number? Do you have a friend or relative who can use their payment card if Sky won't accept yours?

In any event the card is only required for Ch4, the 'Five' channels and Sky 3. You can get all the other free channels without any 'help' from Sky.

I wasn't being sarcastic; I was trying to help. I would guess that a flat cable is already flat so you'll be hard pushed to make it flatter. However, unless there's a finite gap, your window won't close fully.
