HD SECTION (HiDef)

Hot on the heels of news that Sony has cut $100 off the price of its latest Blu-ray DVD player comes the announcement from Toshiba, developer of the rival HD-DVD format for next-generation discs, that all its laptops will next year incorporate HD-DVD disk drives. Story

The BBC Trust has launched a public value test (PVT) into the proposal for a high definition channel. The test - undertaken to determine the public value of the service and its market impact - includes two periods of public consultation. Full details

Sky has announced a wider choice of movies in high definition as well as a commitment to commission 90% of programmes on Sky One in HD Full Story
The Other Stuff

Sony has unveiled a paper-thin television display that could one day be worn as clothing. The prototype display comes as consumer electronics giants search for new ways of producing increasingly thinner displays. Full Story

The Sunday Times claims low-energy light bulbs can block shortwave reception and have been shown to disrupt television remote controls. Scientists have found that the infrared waves given out by some models of the bulbs are almost exactly the same frequency as those from the hand-sets. Sometimes this means the controls fail altogether. On other occasions the channels may be spontaneously switched by the “impostor” rays of the bulbs. For the same reason, says the Sunday Times, they can even stop a radio from receiving shortwave programmes. (Media Network)

South Korean consumer electronics giant LG launched a next-generation DVD player, capable of playing both Sony-backed Blu-ray discs and the rival HD DVD format led by Toshiba. Also, US Hollywood studio Warner Brothers unveiled its solution to the format clash that threatens to stall take-up of high-definition DVDs: a single disc, known as Total HD that can play movies and TV shows in both the Blu-ray and HD DVD standards.

Sony have said it would enable most of its new televisions, including high-definition flat screens, to play video from the Internet. Sony, which unveiled the plan at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, said the drive to marry Internet and other digital video with traditional devices was part of a bid to showcase its four strategic growth areas: video gaming, digital imaging, high-definition and mobile products.(Media Network)

10.744 H 22.000 5/6 was showing some sort of black snow last night instead of the standard black screen. I havn't been able to check it today, but it looked as if something was going on.

Sorry if this is some useless info, I'm not very up to date with this whole malarkey! Must train myself up on it!

If 53205 turns out to be 'Discovery 2', I would guess that 'Discovery Civilisation' will move EPG numbers so that 'Discovery 2' can be placed on 522.

Perhaps Discovery Civilisation will move to 536 and then Discovery HD will move to 549 (i.e. the end of the Docs section).....

I wouldn't rule a return out just yet, at least not until the label has been removed from transponder. Afterall, remember 'Jackpot' (848) got removed for a few days, before returning.

Yes, 9604 is now showing some sort of intermittent snow and switches to a black screen now and again. I wonder if it's testing for something? Usually they deactivate it if testing is over so it's a mystery why they have left it active.

The end of Rapture now I think. I had some hope it may return, but I think it has totally gone now.

A Sky Offer just popped through the letterbox, which may be of interest to some folks:

Sky Movies for £1/month for 3 months over the summer.

Call 08705 466 661 and quote "Summer Sky Movies Offer"

Available to residential customers with Sky Sports Mix, & 2, 4, and 6 Sky Entertainment mixes. Valid until 30th June 2007. Can be removed anytime after the first month with a phone call.

Having looked at the selection of movies on offer over the summer I wont be upgrading
