There was another thread about cheap hotels near Elephant and castle the other week try that thread.

Train tickets I don't know, where does the megabus go, heard that's dirt cheap.

For trains, though you may find it cheaper to fly down.

http://www.londonhotels4u.com/hotels_by_prices.asp

Some times it's often cheaper to go to a hotel instead of a B&B ask them what they charge and then offer them half that.

MegaBus.com can be very cheap, depends when you book as to how many cheap seats they have left, they start from £1

Thread hijack alert.

That brings up another point, I know there's a FM on here involved in the hotel trade.

I'd presume if someone turned up offered you half price and you had rooms empty you'd take the money, and empty room isn't earning anything.
Even better if you can do it 'cash' off the books.

Yeah, often works for me, hence my mentioning.

I've done it before - but it generally only works if you turn up at 10-11pm at night (but not drunk!)- and be prepared to walk away and try a few other places. It's unlikely to work earlier in the day. You can also get a good discount at B&Bs if you don't want breakfast.

Back on topic: You probably don't want to go to the bottom end of the B&B/hotel market in London. There are some dreadful places.

If money really is an issue then how about a hostel?(http://www.hostels.com/) . The other good thing about London is the public transport so you can get a better deal by stopping further out.

when i was in London in March with a friend of mine we stayed here rooms from like £40-50. Not posh but reasonably decent and close to earls court tube station.

be advised though that from what i heard tube lines close regularly on weekends for engineering work. Next time I swear i'm playing the london underground song on my mobile in one of the tube stations

Yup there are regular ads in London from TFL about Tube closures at the weekends for engineering work.

Check with TFL's website you out of towners.

As for the half price room thing does it work across the board, the large hotel combines Holiday Inn and the like?

There is the Travel Inn at County Hall on the South Bank - fantastic position almost next to the London Eye
Premier Travel Inn, County Hall, Belvedere Road, London SE1 7PB (0870 238 3300; www.premiertravelinn.com). Doubles from £99 room only; rates are higher on nights of peak demand

Also Bankside House by the Tate Modern is also very near and is quite cheap and basic and also in a fantastic position.
Bankside House, 4 Sumner Street, London SE1 9JA (020-7107 5750; www.lsevacations.co.uk). Doubles £67 including breakfast; triple rooms £86; quads £95

A bit further along South Bank near the excellent Borough Market (which you should also visit) is the London Bridge Hotel.
London Bridge Hotel, 8-18 London Bridge, London SE1 9SG (020-7855 2200; www.thelondonbridgehotel.co.uk). Doubles from £109 online, excluding breakfast

Have a good time.

Sorry couldn't resist, but that does sound a bit 'country bumpkin' going to town on the tractor once a month.

A bit of a sweeping generalisation. Yes, there are expensive tourist rip off places as in any other capital city in the world but if you do a bit of research on where to go, you can eat more cheaply than in other parts of the UK, museum entry is free here as it is elsewehre in the country and there are websites dedicated to cheap days out in London.

Try the Citadines in Northumberland Avenue. Very cheap, clean, convenient accommodation.

Northumberland Avenue runs from Trafalgar Square down to the embankment...London Eye is just across the bridge

lol it should be noted that I consider the city I live near to be too expensive, and my own village shop to be too expensive, London even more so.
