BBC Radio 1 presents Student Radio Awards 2003

12 Gold Awards, 2 Live Acts, 1 Fellowship and a great night!

Friday night, BBC Radio 1 in Association with The Radio Academy presented the Student Radio Awards 2003. The ceremony was a great success with performances from Aqualung and Chikinki, 12 Gold Awards, 1 Fellowship to The Radio Academy, and a successful after show party with music from 1Xtra DJ Ronnie Herel, LJ Blendz and XFM legend Eddie Temple-Morris.

The Student Radio Awards 2003, which took place at Canvas in London, had 36 winners, with RaW - The University of Warwick scooping 3 Gold Awards including the outstanding Student Radio Station of the Year Award, with the top prize being a 4 hour show on Radio 1 from midnight till 4am on Christmas Eve.

The night’s highlights included a standing ovation for Red Dwarf and BBC 6 Music legend Craig Charles as well as Controller of Radio 1, Andy Parfit giving XFM presenter and Chair of The Student Radio Awards, Kevin Greening, a Fellowship to The Radio Academy, the highest honour in the broadcasting industry.

This was the eighth year of the Student Radio Awards, which celebrate the talent of Student Radio Stations from around the country. The Awards began in 1996 when The Student Radio Association, and Matthew Bannister as Controller of Radio 1 set up this celebratory event.

Andy Parfit commented in his speech that in comparison to American radio, where the format is monotonous and unadventurous, British radio sees great up and coming talent in student radio, where its members push the boundaries of creating exciting output.

Nice to hear it was a bit better than last year's fiasco.
