Can I ask.. HD DVD's

Right I have a DVD recorder it has got an HDMI output from it and this is how its connected to my TV set. Does that mean it will play HD DVD's??

Thanks

No. To play HD-DVDs you need to have a player capable of playing them. HDMI is just an interface capable of carrying HD or SD signals from one unit to another it has nothing whatever to do with being able to play HD-DVDs.

P.S. You do realise HD-DVD is now largely obsolete?

EDIT: Just thought that you may have meant DVDs with HD recordings on them rather than HD-DVD, it won't play those either.

The HDMI will upscale normal DVD's.

You would need a new Blu Ray player/PS3 to play any 'HD' film. HD players/DVD's are a dead format. As far as I know there's no Blu Ray recorder machines yet as the technology is still new and expensive.

The OP did not mention recording.

Anyway Panasonic have a BluRay recorder with Freesat in the shops, been around about six months now.

Bluray recorders have been out since April 2009.

Prices start from around £495 for the Panasonic DMR BS750 and £699-99 for Panasonic DMR BS850.

Far too expensive for general use.

Depends on your point of view.
As my first dvd player was £550 and my first dvd recorder was £500 , the £495 of a Bluray recorder is pretty good considering it plays Blurays, records Blurays, records HD to its HDD and has Freesat built in.

Mulitregion Magic also do fully multiregion versions of them too so one will definitely be on my shopping list as soon as my current multiregion Bluray gets a bit older

My first DVD Player (no recording at all) was a Pioneer 515 (from memory) - a big silver thing pre-2000. It cost me £499.99.

Back in 1994, I bought a near top of the range Mitsubishi VHS recorder. That was £449.99.

If you go even further back in time, you will find equipment priced even higher - like £600, £800.

It's still a hell of a lot of money to archive a few BBC HD programmes to bluray. You could do the whole job much cheaper with a dvb-s2 card and a PC with a bluray burner without any of the hassle of record only once for most BBC HD and record never for ITV HD. You can get around 40 mins of 1080i on a dual layer dvd blank and play it back in full HD on a £100.00' ish bluray player. A 1tb drive costing about £70.00 and connected to say a £250.00 Foxsat-hdr can store hours of HD programmes much cheaper than the price of the bluray blanks at current prices.

I've only had a computer for 7 years , but my experience during that time convinces me that even Sky and Virgin boxes are more reliable for recording tv than anything with the Microsoft or Windows name attached to it- thats even assuming you could record 2 channels at once while watching a third and many other features available from my current setup

The Panasonic Bluray recorder acts as a Bluray player , a dvd recorder , PVR (it has twin tuners),standard HDD recorder ,so it could actually replace at least 3 of my current devices (dvd recorder ,Bluray player ,freeview PVR) so £449 is a bargain - its a shame that like my current Bluray player the premium for multiregional Bluray still adds £130 to the price
