That might not mean anything, she isn't even listed in the ep1 cast list. Although if she does go perhaps she has another break down?

I must also say that Ruth's hubby had 'dead man walking' written all over him as soon as we saw him.
Completely agree!

Also, someone help me out; was that SJA's Ace Bhatti trying to procure the uranium?

Losing Jo is not really a bad thing, one of the worst cast members except for that Journalist guy that was recruited by Adam for no apparent good reason.

Shame Malcolm had to go but maybe it's not the end for him.

Its so nice to see Ruth back. I just hope everything pans out with her and Harry, because that was major stuff played out for many series.

That new CIA woman or whatever she was.... a bit Christine Dale methinks - But no-where near as good I don't think - not yet,

Another great opener for Spooks. Great to see Ruth back though not so nice to see her husband shot...though could prove interesting in the dynamics between her and Harry in the future. Think the new woman at the CIA is one to watch..methinks she will be a snake in the grass and just as tough as Ros. hope we haven't seen the last of Malcolm as whilst not always out in the field his asides and commentary to observing many events in The Grid were always amusing.

Could someone remind me please - why or how did Ruth leave in the previous (or 2-3) series?

I just watched it on the I Player. I'm so glad Spooks is back I have really missed it!

Top notch action all the way through - is Ruth back permanently or not? I really hope so.

Spooks aren't afraid of killing off main and popular characters so I really thought Malcolm was going to die. I was happy he didn't though - his scene with Harry at the end was so touching and his exit was perfect for his character. He's been in the show since the very start, so it was extremely fitting.

Can't wait for next week!

Ruth left because she was framed for murder in an attempt to blackmail Harry.

She left by faking her own death - which is why Harry said last night after the start when he was talking to the bad guy 'She's dead' and the bad guy said 'we both know that's not true'.

I can't remember exactly, but I think she was framed by the Gov or MI6 or similar for her part in an operation that had implications for the UK and so she was going to be sent to prison. Instead Harry smuggled her out of the country and that was the last time we saw her ... until now!

Yayyy! Great episode! Fab to see Ruth back, Harry was his usual tough self ... really thought too that Malcolm was going to die instead of the boy, was covering my eyes during those scenes! I have a feeling though that Malcolm may pop back once or twice during this series and a horrible feeling he could still end up dead, but let's hope not.

Think Lucas has settled in brilliantly now. Last series I was constantly comparing Lucas to Adam, but now it's Adam who? Lucas has really come into his own, and Ros as ever is just icily brilliant.

The only negative in last nights ep for me was Ruth's hubbie. Not sure if he was just not a great actor but just didn't warm to him and their whole relationship felt a bit odd to me, maybe they just had no chemistry. Wonder what will happen to the stepson now? Prob be shipped off to boarding school like Adam's son while Ruth resumes her role as top spy!

Also, was that CIA guy re-cast? Wasn't there another American on the scene, or was he killed last series? Or did they re-cast the role?
I can't think of any particular CIA folk from series 7, but are you perhaps thinking of Bob Hogan from series 6? He was the guy who sold Adam out to the Redbacks, he's gone now though.

I quite liked last night's episode, although I was hoping that rescuing Harry might take a few episodes rather than just one.

Wasn't that also the fate of the original female lead spy (can't remember names but the glam leads are all a bit interchangeable). Seem to recall there was a trial and she was sent to prison only they bought off a lookie-likie to take her place whilst she was packaged off to Tunisia or such like.

No, she got shot in the head and the bullet took her back to 1981...

Exactly - shouldn't the mods be merging this and putting it in Programmes. It's 21:00 BBC1 - how the hell is that 'Cult'...or are we saying that anything that isn't a police series/comedy show/documentary is suddenly branded as cult. Get a grip Mods.

Bloody fantastic season opener mind. The edge of my seat will be worn away within weeks....thats if an artery doesn't pop under the sheer tension frst!

Yeah I think she was called Zoe ( or was that the actress? ) But yes I remember her actually being in prison and Harry coming to see her and them marching her off and bringing another blond in to take her place. Then they arranged for her boyfriend to get a fake identity and join her! That bit was a bit sickly!!!

By the way what else has the MI6 agent who was killed last night been in ... I know he's quite a well known actor..

Her character was Zoe, played by Keeley Hawes. Her leaving episode always makes me tearful when I watch it

The guy who played the MI6 agent last night played Kevin Spiers in Series 7 of Bad Girls. I'm not sure what else he's been in though.

It was Andrew Scarborough. He was in the excellent Hearts and Bones. Also more recently, The Royal Today.

I've just watched episode 1 of series 8 as I was out last night and I'm not happy!

It was a good episode and I'm glad they actually continued it on from the end of last series as they don't normally do that. The episode normally starts some time after. However, WTF Malcolm retiring, that's not right! I've always been on tender hooks for a few series waiting for when they were going to get rid of him but he and Harry are Spooks. Without either of them, it won't be the same. I said I would never watch Spooks again if either of them left and I've going to stick by it. Malcolm was a cool character but at least the door is open for him to return. By what Harry said, we may not have seen the last of Malcolm. Whoever was responsible for writing out Malcolm should be shot unless Hugh Simon wanted to leave. Think I might send protest messages to the writers. I have a feeling this maybe the last series and I hope it is now.

I'd love to see an episode where they brought back Tom, just to see how he adjusted to his new life. Not for the whole series, just a couple of episodes...
