The Wembley handbag.

In 1951 Britain made ready an exhibition that consisted of structures equalling that of the millenium dome in terms of advanced ideas and were ready on the day, whereas the millenium dome was not an advanced idea. One of the 'attractions' is still in use, although it was never acoustically as good as was hoped for, namely the Festival Hall.
100 years earlier, the Crystal Palace was a true test of engineering that succeeded and probably hasn't been equalled to this day.
Sadly the millenium wheel, by comparison is nothing more than an eyesore erected more by luck than judgement.

Now Britain can't even build a new Wembley sports stadium, at cost, on time, at all. The stadium that had served it's country well for years without problems was razed and all that remains is a pile of shite that will cost more taxpayers millions to re construct. Loosely regarded as representative of a handbag and hopefully one that contains a few extra pounds sterling to pay for UK constructor's shortcomings.
Will Britain be able to remain solvent in an attempt to host the olympics?

I remember paddling in p*ss in the old Wembley at an FA Cup Final, so good riddance to it. I suppose that's the bit that still remains, since it must have been pickled or something. Most people in the toilet were too as I recall.

More posts saying how bad Briton ( I ment Britain )is now although I do partly agree with you for once.
By the way millenium should be spelt millennium and Olympics should start with a capital

True, I fell in to that one didn't I But I don't have peoples spelling as a pet hate.

I will edit thank you for the polite advice, it just shows people who aren't perfect spellers shouldn't call peoples spelling, doesn't it Jargonizer?

Im sorry but the old wembley was an ageing sh**hole!! that represented all that was bad about England eg, living in the past '66 is all English football has the rest is under acheivment and ridiculous expectation, living on past glories and failing to move towards the future.

Take a look at the Millenium stadium fantastic! and the new wembley will be even better!

However it will never be as good as the newly developed best stadium in the world TWICKENHAM!

Wembley is a world renowned venue, the *Venue of Legends* as its called. I absolutely cannot believe that Wembley hasn't been built on time and within budget. I also find it frustrating that we are now left with a 'will it' or 'wont it' scenario regarding the FA Cup final which must be hugely embarrasing for The FA, never mind Multiplex who are building it. Wembley will be the greatest stadium in the world when it is finished.....only problem is we just don't know when that will be.

construction is not like anyother form a manufacture there are so many variables that are involved that it is nigh on impossible to meet deadlines especialy when you are dealing with state of the art construction as is the case with the new Wembley, as many of the people involved are unsure of how it will work. If you think on a standard building project such as an extension you should allow 10-15% on top of the estimate for unforseen extras. put that into a project the size of Wembley and it is easy to see why it is so difficult.

It's a shame that it's got this close to the FA cup final, but it won't be the end of the world if it has to go to Cardiff (who are great hosts) for one more year. At the end of the day, the new Wembley is a world-beating stadium and will be for a good few years to come. To be fair to the contractors, they are still working their guts out, despite the fact that they now know it will be a huge financial loss to them (being a fixed-price contract).

Wembley is beginning to look like the land version of the Queen Mary.

No problem with it going to Cardiff, regardless of whether its finished on time, TFL have seemingly forgotten that a stadium of this size requires a set of roads/rail connections that work, but they are happy making far too much money charging motorists in the centre.

I suspect Wembley will host this years FA Cup Final. The stadium will not be finished, but this will be cosmetic things like landscaping, decor, executive boxes and concessions.

Can anyone tell me why we are building a new Olympic stadium in east London, surely Wembley Stadium will suffice and save hundreds of millions. I am fed up of paying for these 'big ideas' which are nothing more than monuments to politicians egos.

Pardon my errors. Ment should be meant, but I'm sure that was a typo.

All I'm able to gather from your comment is that you apparently cannot read. May I recommend correspondence courses?

Possibly as much as you don't david, but my memories of it go back a bit longer than your's I believe.
That is unless you watched the FA cup on TV before me, which was 1950 when Arsenal beat Liverpool 2.0 and I can still name the 11 Arsenal players on the day .
I do prefer rugby union and still support England as I have done since 1968 on, when Wales won everything, but I knew that England would one day be the great rugby side it could be and then was until a couple of years ago.
Tell me all about England my motherland and what you ever did for it and why you think it's the bee's knees, but don't have the slightest clue as to why you do?????

Does any one of you understand and realise what I'm trying to say?

If you wrote it in plain English we would! The quote above does not make sense. I thought I had seen some gibberish on DS but that takes the biscuit!

a) If the London Eye is such an eyesore, why is it so popular and why are other cities copying or planning to copy?

b) The new Wembley will be the finest of it's kind in the world. It may be slightly late (so what) and it will costs the Australian contrcator more than they thought but it won;t cost the taxpayers anything - either in initial costs or over runs as it's being built on behalf of the FA

Hi david, are you another that needs a correspondence course in english, or is my way of writing too complicated for you? Why must I be driven to write in words of one syllable all the time to suit the youth of Tony Blair's new Britain?
Get your asses out while there's still time, but then again, why should you when the brainwashing has already worked and you're mostly all convinced that the UK is wonderful.
Stay there guys and enjoy all that is great, good and superb.

So Wembley is being built by an Australian company?
How wonderful is that?
Britain needs to employ the one time banished convicts to build their new national symbols?

HAH!
