BBC Breakfast v GMTV
Watching coverage of the tragic events in Northern Ireland the past two mornings I thought it demonstrated how weak the GMTV coverage was by comparison with the BBC.While the BBC had reporters live from the scenes of both shootings GMTV ended up with their people standing in a back street in Belfast miles from the locations and with virtually no interviews or insight.I suppose as they long-since ditched UTV they couldn't expect any help from that direction while the BBC used their Belfast people. GMTV cannot be taken seriously as a news provider and the idea they are an alternative to ITN is laughable in IMHO.

There is no contest between the two. BBC comes out on top everytime even if it has dumbed down recently.
GMTV is only interested in daft stories, Mr Motivator and extrortion using high cost stupidly easy competions. There have been many instances where GMTV have cut from a serious news item to a trivial one. |

GMTV is Tabloid TV for the masses who want to hear about z-list celebrities and 'what's on telly tonight'.
It cannot possibly be taken as a 'serious' news programme. |

GMTV has been dumbing down for a while now - it started when they employed Anthea Turner

To be honest I don't actually care about news coverage in the morning and sometimes its very depressing, so thats why I prefer GMTV in the morning. I don't think it pretends to be a heavyweight news show as people keep slating them for, its like saying Loose Women is a rubbish current affairs show.
I do think its been a lot better since the revamp in terms of news though. There aren't as many of the daft stories like "a new survey suggests that eating salad will give you a brain tumour". |

The BBC Breakfast programme is drab though. I rarely ever watch it. Can't stand Bill Turnbull.

Well, the BBC does everything better than ITV, it's no contest really. ITV is so tacky on all levels.
However, I've gotta say that flippin' Turnbull geezer gets under my skin so much!!! And he really annoyed me this morning; he was soooooo insensetive to that guy who's daughter was killed by a speeding motorist on a country road. Silverton had already mentioned that fact that the driver was on drugs at the time and that reducing the speed limit might still not have saved his daughter, but no, Turnbull had to go and labour the point to the poor guy again, what a prat he is!!! |

But Kate 'Robot' Silverton is even worse. She sits there looking like she's lost her purse or something. It seems to take all her effort just to crack a smile. The BBC couldnt have employed a more holier than thou presenter with less personality if they tried. It is beyond me why Sussanah Reid is continually shoved to the Friday morning slot when she is a much better presenter, and seems to possess a human heart, unlike the Robot. |

GMTV isn't supposed to be a news programme hence why they have news bulletins
This is like comparing Five Live Breakfast with Radio 2's Terry Wogan, and saying that Terry's show is rubbish because there isn't enough news coverage. |

Both are pretty bad. However it depends on whether your wanting to be entertained or informed as to which one is better. For news coverage and discussion, BBC Breakfast trumps GMTV, for tv and showbiz GMTV's better.
I think GMTV has more relatable presenters but it has too many silly features and competiitions where as with BBC Breakfast, although the presenters are a bit too.. upper-middle class for me, it's more interesting and intellectual. |

A lot of stations, understandably, reduced their news presence in Northern Ireland in recent years. Sky let most of their team go and now only have a relatively inexperienced correspondent, Viki Hawthorne there. This was understandable because it is easy to get reporters into NI from Heathrow in a couple of hours and also because there are loads of freelance staff around Belfast that can be used to comment (Alan Murray, Liam Clarke, Liam Creagh, Ed Moloney would be just a few that spring to mind)

BBC Breakfast is a rolling news programme, GMTV is a magazine show with news bulletins, there's really no comparison. Though I agree Bill Turnbull is annoying.... is Sian not still on it? Think she's great, much better than bossyboots Kate Silverton who comes across like an Apprentice reject.

BBC is definitely better if you want to find out about the real news in the morning, but sometimes in the morning I'd rather watch something less serious and a bit of chat about "what's on tv" suits me better. It depends on my mood.

I appreciate that there's been some appalling new stories in the last few days, that both formats have been covering, however on a more geneal breakfast tv note... I do miss The Big Breakfast (in the good ole Chris Evans, Gaby Roslin and DVO days)
Does anyone think that there's still a place for a more lighthearted start to the day? |
