Battlestar Galactica - Best Sci Fi show ever? Yes or No?
Was Battlesatar Galactica the best Sci Fi show ever?
In my opinion it was. It didnt have the chessyness that other shows have, It hard a dark side to it, Main characters died!, They ended the show when it was popular, instead of letting it die like Atlantis etc. In my opinion it beats Star Trek and all the rest hands down! And i Love Star Trek! Do you agree? |

The X-Files was sooo much better, and there was always a bit of light/hidden humour

No - but only because the premise was so grim. BSG stuck to it and was all the better for it but the show was hard to watch at times, if you know what I mean.
For me, DS9 is still the best, good mixture of stories and some great comedy moments/episodes. Still, looking forward to buying BSG Season 4 on Blu Ray.

There was flourishes of humor but very dry. More gallows humor would have been fitting.
Its certainly up there, but I hope I have yet to see the best sci-fi show ever! |

no, it started off good then turned in to a load of rubish, with Gob being a huge copout.

Are we allowed to give it a draw with some others?

I would have said yes, but after the last few episodes which promised so much but never delivered and the finale which was severely disappointing....I'd have to say no.

For me, BSG probably pips Firefly to the post. And yes, I loved the finale. Unlike some, I thought season 2 has the weakest stuff, and thought the final season beat seasons 2 and 3.
I'm still weighing up the BSG/Buffy thing, but as that wasn't sci-fi so it's all good. Quote:

I would be reluctant to place Firefly in any kind of 'best of' poll. It simply wasn't on long enough. Many shows are at their strongest creatively in their first few episodes and it's very hard to say whether the show would of had the same impact had it been stretched for 4-5 years. It almost feels like Firefly has the air of a celebrity that's died young - many people heaping praise simply because of their premature and 'shock' passing. I say this as a fan of the show, I really liked it. But I don't think it's fair to compare it with other shows that stayed on the air much longer.
As for BSG, I'd definitely put it up there at the top of the list. Bring on Caprica. |

No. That will forever be Babylon 5 for me.
Though BSG comes pretty damn close. |

I agree that Firefly was too short to stand judgement beside series that lasted a good while. It never had to prove that its premise could be sustained over multiple seasons. Thus I divide the award for Best Sci Fi series into two categories.
Best Short Sci Fi Series: Firefly Best Long Sci Fi Series: Babylon 5 Even if Battlestar Galactica's ending hadn't been completely terrible, it was never really a threat to overtake Babylon 5, or Firefly (if we can break my rule and compare it to longer series for a moment), in overall merit, despite excellence in individual areas like production values, cinematography, and acting. The collection of characters BSG offered us was not nearly as loveable as the collection Firefly gave us, and the fictional universe BSG invited us into was not nearly as rich and mythic as that which Babylon 5 presented. |

Also it had a lot of flaws even in its short run. Sometimes the plots were very weak and lazy, and the dialogue could be embarrassing, and the character points formulaic. For me BSG beats Firefly, and pretty much everything else. (I never got into Buffy etc).

Disagree on all counts. The dialogue was especially outstanding -- highly stylized and deliberately anachronistic., and I well know that there are always going to be people who hate that kind of thing.

Definitely the best Sci Fi show on so many levels.
Great script, darkness, tension, acting, soundtrack, cgi. The first 2 seasons are phenomenal, the latter 2 are still pretty good. As for the people praising Buffy I cannot fathom the credibility this show receives. Its a kids show . As for Firefly DrivelIts like comparing steak and sausages. No comparison. |

I don't think I would say BSG is the best sci-fi show ever (I would have to think long and hard about that statement, and I still have a lot of sci-fi shows I have to watch fully to express my opinion on the ranking of shows), but it took on some themes that I have never seen tackled anywhere else in sci-fi television (class issues, for instance), and I loved how complex and non-stereotypical most of the female characters were (something that bugs me about Heroes). It's definitely in my top 5 sci-fi shows.

Lucky Supernatural isn't really sci-fi...
I'm gonna agree. At least the first three and a half seasons. |

I dont really think shows such as Buffy can be classed as Sci fi, more supernatural.
As for Babylon and firefly, never watched them, for me they were shows that could have been so much more, but low budgets and CGI put me off. For me Battlestar had everything, Great Actors, Great CGI, Big Budgets, And we could relate to the show, it wasnt too far off from our own future maybe? For those who say the final series wasa huge let down, what did you expect? They showed the dismay of people who had lost everything, had their hopes raised and dashed over the Origional Earth. We had the fantastic Mutiny, and lets be honest the last series was only Ten episodes long! It wasnt as if we had 20 episodes of endless crap! And I cant think of any filler episodes that we are so dumped with on other Sci Fi shows. How many times in other sci fi shows, have we sat thorugh some pathetic filler episode that drags out? At least in Battlestar we never had that, every episode offered some new information, carried on with the story arc, and was building up to a even bigger episode! Nope Battlestar wins it for me, and it will be hard to top it! |
